Fund will support student-athlete scholarships and ensure a more inclusive experience

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Athletics announced the launch of the Mike Campbell Legacy Project Endowment, Friday. The fund has been established by Bronco alumni Booker Brown (men's basketball 1971-73), Trent Johnson (men's basketball 1974-78), and Carl Powell (men's basketball, 1977-79), to help fund scholarships for student-athletes and preserve an inclusive experience at Boise State. The scholarship is named in honor of Campbell, who passed away in November 2022.

In Mike's memory, along with his spouse Penni Campbell, the group shared the following statement that outlines Mike's foundational beliefs.

"Your name, gender, race, religion, power, fame, or fortune should not give you the right to treat anyone differently. Your ability to get an education should not be hindered by any of the above factors. It's necessary to treat one another with dignity and respect in the same manner you wish to be treated."

Campbell's impact was recognized in 2005 with the Boise State University Distinguished Alumni Award given to extraordinary alumni who have enhanced the reputation of the university by making a difference in the world through daily impact in their companies or chosen profession, communities, and Boise State University.

This group, including Campbell (Football, 1973-74), were instrumental in launching the Legacy Project in February 2021 to celebrate the storied successes accumulated over several decades by Black student-athletes at Boise State. In 2022, they were profiled by KTVB on the Legacy Project and their time at Boise State.

The first class of Legacy Project honorees was a fraternity of Black student-athletes who competed between 1968-80, and helped lay the foundation for diversity and inclusion in Bronco Athletics before going on to successful careers in sport and beyond. This group attended school during the early years of Boise Junior College, Boise State College and later Boise State University, laying a significant part of the foundation for the University.

Bronco Athletics invites all Black student-athletes to join the Legacy Project and share their stories. Sign up or submit  information for a friend or loved one who has passed away.
