B.J.C. Facing Tough Battle; Grid Skirmish to Begin at 3 o’Clock at Public School Field

BOISE, Idaho – College football comes booming into the Idaho capital today for its opening performance as the Ricks Vikings from Rexburg, powered by one of their strongest athletic arrays in the history of the school, invade Public School Field to test the merits of Boise's Junior college.

The game opens at 3:30 o'clock. Beef and brawn, as well as speed in the backfield, are among the assets claimed by both squads, promising a hard and perhaps spectacular struggle.

Coach Max Eiden in his first year at the Boise college has assembled a squad of 35 huskies, including several former high school and prep stars from Idaho, Utah and Oregon, with which to meet the attack of a team that last week smashed down the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, 16 to 14 in a sensational upset.

Ricks brings into Boise today a squad that should be even more dangerous than the Rexburg eleven in Pocatello last Saturday. The Vikings there performed without the services of their star ball carrier, K. Dopp, elusive 133-pound pigskin toter, who chases through an open field something on the order of the Idaho Vandals' former Little Giant, Willis Smith. Dopp, who has recovered from a leg injury, will be in action today.

Both teams carry a heavy line for a small college. The B.J.C. forward wall averages around 170 pounds, while the invaders range approximately five pounds heavier.

Coach Eiden will attempt to match Dopp's spectacular running with a balanced backfield that includes no outstanding star, but four reliable ball packers. Gus Urresti, 194-pound Basque fullback, is the Broncs chief mainstay. He cracks the line when a few yards are needed and helps clear the path by his blocking on the around end sweeps.

Bob Shaw, veteran quarterback, does his best work in the open field for the Broncs. Cantlin, another quarter, is Eiden's best man on a passing attack, while Matt Stoddard, halfback, is usually capable of adding a few yards through tackle or around end.

Recruits to See Action

Although not listed in the starting lineup, two recruits who joined the B.J.C. squad this week will probably see action this afternoon, Eiden said. "Power" House, a new 215-pound student from Star, will fill a tackle position, while Wally McGill, former amateur boxer, may get a chance to crack the line. He is a halfback.
