Boise Junior College Wins Surprising 6 to 0 Game from Strong Rivals
BOISE, Idaho – Taking a hint from the old explorer himself, Boise Junior College capped a Columbus Day celebration Friday afternoon by defeating Ricks College Vikings, 6 to 0, on wind swept Public School Field.
Â
Underdogs at the start and doped even by the most ardent fans to hold the touted invaders to two or three touchdowns, the Broncos snorted and bucked in unstoppable style, ran the entire game at their own pace, and boomed over the winning touchdown in the last quarter.
Â
Dale Cantlin slithered through the 10-yard line on a spinning off-tackle sprint down the side lines for the score. Orbea, left end, paved the way by spearing a pass on the 20-yard line that was good for a first and 10. On two plays Cantlin plunged to the 11. A line drive was stopped dead. On the second play the elusive quarter broke free again, shook off a couple of tacklers and raced over standing up. A kick for extra point went low.
Â
Ricks on Defensive
Â
From the opening kickoff by Ricks, the Junior College was master of the situation. Three drives punched steadily down into Viking territory with Shaw and Gus Urresti, prize fighting fullback, lugging the ball. With their back to the Wall Ricks held for downs each time and punted out.
Â
Punting Duel
Â
It was a battle of punting for three quarters. Both teams kicked and prayed for breaks that didn't come. There were fumbles on both sides but none proved costly. Defensively the Broncos were as strong as they were at the attack. The dash and zip that enabled Ricks College to upset the Southern Branch at Pocatello last week never materialized. Junior College ends romped down on the long runs, and the line, heavily outweighed, bore up under a constant pounding.
Â
That weight began to tell in the second half. Scoresby loped through the middle for a 10-yard gain from midfield. Clements and Dopp thudded off guard for another first down. Hollister, right end, caught a pass from Scoresby for another 10 yards. The Bronco line bowed its back on the next three plays and Ricks was thrown back to the 30-yard line. A kick rolled over the goal line and the offensive was stopped.
Â
Broncos Score
Â
After an exchange of kicks Ricks opened up with an assortment of laterals that clicked but brought small gains. Dopp and Urresti took up their booting duel again and the quarter ended with the same old mauling and milling around the Ricks 45-yard line.
Â
Right off the reel Max Eiden's Broncos ripped in and scored.
Â
Ricks came back with a pass barrage that swept through the air down to the Bronco 20-yard-line and narrowly missed tying the count. Hollister speared four for 10 yards each. Scoresby did the flinging and alternated his passes with an occasional run that reeled off steady yardage.
Â
Attempt Fails
Â
With half a minute to go Ricks had the ball on the Bronco 25-yard line. A pass to left end failed. Another shot was knocked down by Stoddard, and the third try was smeared when a backfield man let the ball juggle out of his fingers.
Â
It was the first victory for the Junior College this year and their second game. A crowd of 1,500 turned out for the opener of college football at Boise.
