NCAA Approves Technology Rules in Football

4/19/2024 2:23:00 PM | Football

Automatic timeouts to occur in last two minutes of 2nd and 4th quarters

INDIANAPOLIS – Optional technology rules in football, effective for the 2024 season, were approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday.

In games involving Football Bowl Subdivision teams, each school will have the option to use coach-to-player communications through the helmet to one player on the field. That player will be identified by having a green dot on the back midline of the player's helmet.

The communication from the coach to the player will be turned off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock or when the ball is snapped, whichever comes first.

For all three divisions, teams have the option of using tablets to view in-game video only. The video can include the broadcast feed and camera angles from the coach's sideline and coach's end zone.

Teams can have up to 18 active tablets for use in the coaching booth, sideline and locker room. Tablets cannot be connected to other devices to project larger additional images and cannot include analytics, data or data access capability or other communication access. All team personnel will be allowed to view the tablets during the game.

The Football Rules Committee, which met the last week of February, had a thorough discussion regarding wearable technologies.

Two-minute timeout
The panel approved adding an automatic timeout when two minutes remain in the second and fourth quarters.
This rules change synchronizes all timing rules, such as 10-second runoffs and stopping the clock when a first down is gained in bounds, which coincides with the two-minute timeout.

Other rules changes
  • Allowing conferences the option of using a collaborative replay review system. This will be formally added to the rules book; it had been an experimental rule.
  • Penalizing horse-collar tackles that occur within the tackle box as a 15-yard personal foul. Previously, a horse-collar tackle within the tackle box was not a foul.
Additionally, head coaches can conduct interviews with broadcast partners after the first and third quarters. This was allowed on an experimental basis last season and will be added as a permanent rule.

CAMPS
Boise State Football Camps are returning this summer to campus and registration is now available! The Youth Camp will run from June 3-5, the Specialist Camp will be held June 9 and the Team Camp will take place June 10-12. Registration for all three camps is available online now.

Youth Camp
Designed for ages 6-13 the Boise State Youth Camp will give young players the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of all three phases of football: offense, defense and special teams. The emphasis of this camp is to develop your football skills at every position: offensive/defensive line, quarterback, defensive back, running back, wide receiver and more.

In addition to the Bronco coaching staff, current Boise State players will coach and lead all participants in a series of individual drills during each practice. We will utilize the state-of-the-art Caven-Williams Sports Complex, our Grass Practice Field and the Blue Turf of Albertsons Stadium.

Specialist Camp
Designed for high school kickers, punters and long snappers, Boise State – home to the nation's most powerful kicker and punter combination in the country – has a single-day camp designed to teach the important fundamentals of specialists.

Team Camp
This is an overnight, contact camp open to individuals as well as high school teams (grades 9-12). Most camp drills will utilize thud tempo. All individual campers will be placed on Renegade teams to compete in each of the individual, one-on-one, and team sessions of the camp. Players should be prepared to compete in drills and competition under the direction of the Boise State Football Staff.

Per NCAA rules, all sports camps and clinics conducted by Boise State University are open to any and all entrants, and enrollment is only limited based on age, grade level, gender, and/or the number of restrictions as specified by each camp.

BRONCO STAMPEDE
Boise State Athletics will host a barnstorming tour through the Gem State with events in Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Nampa, Coeur d'Alene, and Boise to celebrate the success of Bronco sports programs and provide Bronco Nation an opportunity to meet football head coach Spencer Danielson, athletic director Jeramiah Dickey announced on Tuesday.
Each public event will include a Q&A with coach Danielson and other Bronco coaches, student-athletes, and administrators. Fans who register in advance will be eligible for promotional giveaways including season tickets and signed memorabilia. All events are open to the public and free of charge.

COMING TO ALBERTSONS STADIUM THIS FALL
Boise State has one of the most appealing home schedules in school history this fall, with home games set against Portland State (Sept. 21), Washington state (Sept. 28), Utah State (Oct. 5), San Diego State (Nov. 2), Nevada (Nov. 9) and Oregon State (Nov. 30).

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
