Nation’s leader in punting average was named semifinalist for 2023 award

BOISE, Idaho – The Augusta Sports Council announced the preseason watch list for the 2024 Ray Guy Award, honoring the top punter in the FBS. Boise State's James Ferguson-Reynolds is one of 34 players on this year's watch list. The Australian led the FBS in punting average (49.7) in 2023 and returned to the Broncos with kicker Jonah Dalmas to give Boise State one of the top specialist duos in the country.

Ferguson-Reynolds collected All-America honors from four outlets in 2023, including second team nods from the AFCA and Sports Illustrated. He was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award and was named Ray's 8 Punter of the Week on Oct. 31. He was also tabbed All-Mountain West First Team. The junior earned preseason All-America selections from Athlon Sports, College Football News and Phil Steele.

Last season, Ferguson-Reynolds secured the sixth-highest punting average in NCAA history at 49.7 yards per punt. This mark set the school record and ranked third in MW history. He owns four of the top-eight single-game averages in Bronco history and sent 29 punts over 50 yards in 2023. He was a three-time weekly finalist for Ray's 8 Punter of the Week and earned MW Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 9.

The final candidate list for the 2024 Ray Guy Award will be announced Nov. 6. Ten semifinalists will be chosen on Nov. 15, then three will be selected from that group on Nov. 6. The winner will be recognized on Dec. 12 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
