Volleyball Season Preview: The Setters

BOISE, Idaho – With one week left before the start of the season, we preview the 2024 Broncos with a four-part series. Today, we start with the setter position, where Boise State has three candidates vying for the starting role.

Last year's starter, Noelani Helm, is gone after finishing her eligibility last fall.

The lone returner with any collegiate experience at the position is junior Elle Cotton. The native of Elk River, Minn., has played in 42 matches and 127 sets during her previous two campaigns with the Broncos. In her career, she has recorded 300 assists for a 2.26 per set average, 33 service aces, 85 digs, and nine blocks.

"Elle is one of the team's best all-around athletes on the roster," said head coach Shawn Garus. "She's a dynamic mover on the court and loves to play an aggressive style. She has also been a great upper classman for the freshmen setters to learn from."

Joining Cotton at the setter position is a pair of freshmen, Lilli Etter from Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash., and Kiki Remensperger from Poway High School in the San Diego metro area.

Etter finished high school as a four-year starter, primarily at the setter position on the Gonzaga Prep varsity team. She was a 2023 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, a 2023 all-state first team, a 2022 honorable-mention all-state, and a four-time All-Greater Spokane League honoree. Etter helped lead the Bullpups to three consecutive Washington 4A State championships.

"Lilli has been really exciting from the day she arrived on campus this summer," Garus said. "The returning players have had nothing but great things to say about her as a setter and a volleyball player. Lilli is really well rounded, plays primarily at setter, but can attack the ball and is strong defensively."

Remensperger was a four-year starter for Poway High School's varsity team, three years at setter and one at outside hitter. She was a first-team All-CIF San Diego Section honoree as a senior and a two-time All-Palomar Conference Team member.

"Kiki is as technically skilled as any setter we've ever had during my 16 years here," said Garus. "She can locate every set from anywhere on the court. She is an outstanding athlete, quick on defense, and has a fast arm swing."

The Broncos open the season August 30-September 1, at Arizona's Cactus Classic in Tucson, where they will face Arizona, Tennessee State and VCU.

The Broncos' home opening weekend is September 13-15, when they host CSU Bakersfield, Gonzaga, and Idaho State in the Boise State Classic.
