Boise State Dominates Gonzaga for Sixth Win

9/15/2024 4:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State volleyball rolled to a four-set 25-12, 25-18, 20-25, 25-13 win Sunday afternoon over the Gonzaga Bulldogs to close out the Boise State Classic in Bronco Gym.

The Blue and Orange hit a solid .328 for the match and held the Bulldogs to .169. The Broncos were also dominant in serving, tallying 12 aces on the day.

Set one was all Boise State, as the Broncos jumped on the Bulldogs early and never let up. The Blue and Orange stormed out to a 9-2 advantage and led by as many as 14 before taking it by 13 at the end, 25-12.

Boise State used a 5-1 run early in the second to break a 6-6 tie and surge ahead for good. The Broncos led by as many as eight down the stretch and claimed the set by seven points at 25-18.

The third was wild, with both teams running off large runs to take the lead. With Boise State down 9-5, it used a 12-1 run to go up 16-10, only to see Gonzaga rally with a 15-4 run to close it out 25-20.

After letting the third set slip away, the Broncos came out with a vengeance in the fourth, using a 9-0 run to go up 12-6 and never looked back. They finished the set hitting .333 and took it 25-13 over the Bulldogs to clinch the match.

TOP BRONCOS

  • Paige Bartsch recorded a season-high 16 kills while hitting .282; she added season-highs for service aces with six and blocks with five to go with nine digs and a season-best 25 points.
  • Annie Kaminski remained hot, hitting .474 for 11 kills with four blocks and 13 points.
  • Anabel Kotzakov hit.381 for nine kills with six digs and one block.
  • Both Kiki Remensperger and Lilli Etter recorded 20 assists and five blocks.
  • Breanna Mitchell recorded a season-high 20 digs.

NOTABLES

  • Paige Bartsch's six service aces are tied for seventh all-time in program history, one shy of her career record of seven. She is also in sole possession of third place in career aces during the rally-scoring era (since 2001) with 109.
  • Kaminski hit .474 against GU; she has hit above .400 in seven of nine matches, including four straight. She also has six contests with four or more blocks.
  • Mitchell's 20-dig match marks the sixth time in her career that she has passed 20 in a contest.

QUOTABLES

Shawn Garus, Head Coach
  • "I give a lot of credit to the leadership in the locker room to keep things positive, even after a tough and emotional loss yesterday. We were back at it at 9 a.m. this morning with our heads in the right place, with confidence in what we do, and let's go out there and play our version of volleyball."
  • "It was good seeing Paige serve well today and get that part of her game back. She has struggled early in the season. She has worked her way back into being the confident server that we know she is, and it definitely gives energy to the gym when she's getting aces."
  •  Annabelle (Kotzakov) and Annie were both pretty consistent with their swings today. I would point out that I thought we passed a lot better today, which gave the setters great opportunities to spread the ball around. I think five of our six attackers hit for above their season-average hitting percentage. So the setters did a great job distributing and getting everybody involved today."
Annie Kaminski, Sixth-Year Middle Blocker
  • "After yesterday, I think we just came out with that fire and played like we know how to play today. I think everyone knew we had to pass better and that everyone took that to heart in this win."

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

  • MVP – Aliyah Sopoaga, Idaho State
  • Sadie Bluth, Idaho State
  • Jamie Striet, Idaho State
  • Annie Kaminski, Boise State
  • Kiki Remensperger, Boise State
  • Hayley Ogden, Gonzaga
  • Learden Lee, CSU Bakersfield
