Broncos Dominant in All Three Phases in Home-Opening Rout of Portland State

9/21/2024 11:53:00 PM | Football

Boise State blocks three kicks in front of sold out crowd, fourth-largest in school history

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State was suffocating in all three phases Saturday night, as the Broncos registered a 56-14 victory over Portland State in the Broncos' home opener Saturday night at Albertsons Stadium.

The Broncos (2-1) combined for 609 total yards – 342 in the air and 267 on the ground – in an offense attack that was rarely stopped. The total marks the first time since 2015 that Boise State has recorded two games of over 600 yards in its first three games. Not only did the Blue and Orange score in eight of 13 possessions but Boise State did not have a drive lasting longer than five minutes.

When Portland State (0-3) regained possession, the Vikings were often stymied. The home-standing Broncos compiled nine tackles for loss, four sacks (by four different players) and forced one fumble. While Boise State's offense averaged 9.5 yards per play, PSU averaged only 4.8 yards per snap.

Even as the Vikings did come within range of scoring, their efforts were thwarted yet again. A sold-out crowd of 36,972 – the fourth-largest crowd in Albertsons Stadium history and the largest for a home opener – witnessed Boise State block three kicks in the game, matching the most by any team in the country this year in a single game.

Ashton Jeanty continued to showcase why he is the most electric player in the nation, churning out 127 rushing yards on 11 carries while only playing in the first half. That average of 11.55 yards per carry ranks as the eighth-best mark in school history.

While Jeanty – the nation's scoring leader – did not reach the end zone, several other Broncos did. Cameron Camper caught a pair of touchdown passes from Maddux Madsen and Dylan Riley, who did not have a career rush prior to the game, scored twice including on a 64-yard run.

Cameron Bates (20-yard run), Matt Lauter (4-yard reception), Madsen (1-yard run) and Tyler Crowe (6-yard run) also reached end zone for the Broncos. The six different players to score in the game marked the most for Boise State in a game since 2016. Madsen was 13-for-18 passing for 188 yards and three touchdowns.

Lauter's performance turned several heads as the tight end hauled in a team-best seven catches for 91 yards. That marked the most receptions in a game by a Boise State tight end since the 2007 Fiesta Bowl when Derek Shouman's eight catches for 72 yards helped Boise State upend Oklahoma in overtime.

Portland State was led by Dante Chachere's 76 yards rushing on 13 carries and 12-for-18 passing night for 126 yards. Peyton Wing led the Vikings defensively with nine tackles.
