Meet Charlotte Siegel: the Swiss Army Knife, Operations QB, and Mentor of Bronco Football…and Mom of Two

Earlier this week, FootballScoop.com, a prominent website for tracking all things football related, announced Boise State’s own Charlotte Siegel was named the 2024 Football Operations Director of the Year. The award is selected annually by prior winners.

Siegel was hired prior to the 2023 season after spending 10 years with the football program at Vanderbilt.

While at Vanderbilt, Siegel was assistant to the head football coach (2013-16), director of internal operations (2017-20) and the director of external operations (2021-22), a role that included oversight of all administrative operations, hiring and football alumni relations efforts. She worked for head coaches James Franklin, Derek Mason and Clark Lea.

A graduate of App State and native of Franklin, Tenn., Charlotte was selected as team captain for three consecutive years of the Mountaineers' soccer team.

When Spencer Danielson was promoted to head coach in December 2023, Danielson immediately promoted her, adding "Assistant Athletic Director/Chief of Staff” title to her role.

Charlotte is the best in the business. She is a 10 out of 10 in all phases,” said Danielson. “She is a relentless worker and does everything to impact our players and help them become the best version of themselves."

Swiss Army Knife

The iconic Swiss Army Knife moniker has become synonymous with something or someone that is the foremost multitasker, i.e., performing several different jobs simultaneously.  Those that work closely with Charlotte, would agree, she is multifunctional, able to balance the professionalism and personal aspects of her role as Chief of Staff and mom with balance.

Charlotte is a servant at heart,” said Boise State general manager Brandon Jones. “She values relationships, is a people person and she connects with everyone within our program. She sets a great example for everyone here, putting in the work to make us the best we can be; while she is also blessed with a great husband, Adam and two precious children who would tell you she puts them first as well.

“Charlotte demonstrates an impressive mix of professional and personal finesse in an amazingly complex job,” said Gabe Rosenvall, Associate Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Academic Services. “She has such a huge impact on the quality of life for so many.”

Operations QB

The role of the Director of Football Operations (DFOs) is unique to any school but for Boise State the job includes orchestrating a small army to direct every off-field movement and detail of Bronco football, 365 days a year.  She is also the mastermind behind the logistics for every road game, i.e., ground and air transportation, schedule, seat assignments, lodging, etc. Think “air traffic controller” but for football.

In fact, depending on the away game, the travel party could include up to 200 people. For last month’s Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Charlotte was a key driver of all the logistics for a party of nearly 500 over a five-day period.

Charlotte is the epitome of an organizational guru," said Heather Berry, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Athletics Personnel Services and Athletics Chief of Staff. “What sets her apart is her attention to all the details. She is dialed, has a plan for every scenario and thinks through how each decision could impact others. She is someone not only football, but myself and other internal departments lean on for guidance and collaboration. As a wife and mother, not only does Charlotte show up for those she works with every day, but she consistently shows up for her main priority, her husband Adam, and her children. She is a superwoman!

Today’s DFOs must also consider and plan for the shape-shifting world of NCAA athletics, with conference realignment, transfer portal and NIL chief amongst them.

Former DFO of the Year and chief of staff for Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian, Jason Grooms shared this about Charlotte with FootballScoop.com.

"As a former collegiate soccer player herself, Charlotte is aware of what it takes to succeed at this level. Charlotte is very bright; but what has stood out to me over the seven years we worked together is how well she connects with people and is able to think through all of the details when planning something and consider the people involved and how this will impact their lives. She has a servant's heart and that makes her a leader."

Mentor

While Charlotte is the architect for all things among the football staff, the up-and-comers such as coordinators and graduate assistants also benefit from her experience.

“She's been a great mentor for me, helping me to learn this whole industry and everything that comes with it,” said Keaton Davis, Bronco Football Operations Coordinator. “One of the things I admire about Charlotte is her intention to help people grow within this profession. I know so many people that Charlotte has helped secure roles within this industry. She truly helps our program and the people in our profession keep moving forward."

It has meant everything to me,” said Shaona Renczkowski, Graduate Assistant in Football Operations. “Charlotte is the first person that has given me an opportunity to work in college football, and not only has she helped me expand my horizons between operations and recruiting player personnel, but when we hired Brandon (Jones) she made sure I was able to continue to focus on my passion, recruiting. I owe a lot of my future success, that success I haven't even achieved yet, to her. And, she's just a great human being. It has been a great opportunity to work and collaborate with her over the last two years.

Impact

"Charlotte has made an enormous impact on me since the day she arrived,” said Davis. “She is just an incredible leader. Charlotte is the best person to be my boss. When you talk about someone who you want to work for, it's the type of person Charlotte is."

Bronco Nation is lucky to have her on our team.
