Jazmine Smith and Sydney Dreves led Boise State with eight kills each
LAS VEGAS – Boise State could not overcome the UNLV defense at the net on Thursday as the Broncos were swept by the Rebels 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) in The Pavilion.
A week after taking down the Rebels (11-10, 5-6 MW) in five sets at home, the Broncos (14-8, 6-5 MW) were slowed down offensively by UNLV as Boise State hit .122 against the Rebels' .282 hitting percentage. UNLV had 11 blocks to Boise State's five.
Jazi Smith and Sydney Dreves led the way for the Broncos with eight kills each. The freshman Dreves also had six digs, two aces and a block.
Layla Smith had a team-best three blocks to go with her six kills on a .455 attack percentage (one error, 11 attempts).
Lilli Etter had a double-double for the second time in the last three matches as she finished with 17 assists and 16 digs.
In the first, the two sides were locked in a tight set until the Rebels opened up a 19-15 lead after scoring five of the six points over a stretch. A kill by UNLV sparked the burst, but the Broncos had a bad set, attack error and service error to fall behind by four points.
The Broncos later pulled within three at 22-19 thanks to a Kailyn Jager kill, but the Rebels closed out the first with back-to-back kills.
Boise State fell behind 17-10 in the second, but it used a 6-0 run midway through the set with Dreves on the service line to cut the deficit to one. L. Smith's two kills sandwiched an ace by Dreves to force UNLV to call a timeout, but the Broncos kept it going by forcing two attack errors and notching a block by L. Smith and Jager that made it 17-16 UNLV.
However, the Rebels scored eight of the final 11 points in the set to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
Boise State led by as much as four at 17-13 in the third, but UNLV trimmed the Bronco advantage before retaking the lead at 20-19 and going on to finish the sweep.
