LAS VEGAS – Tereza Polakova and Masa Viriant placed third and fourth, respectively, as the Boise State women's tennis team concluded play at the second edition of the Mountain West Fall Qualifiers, Sunday.
The Broncos started strong on day one, winning all three singles matches and one of two doubles contests. In doubles, Polakova and Paula Schaefer advanced to the quarterfinals before falling in a tightly contested match to San Diego State's Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley, 8-6.
In singles, Viriant reached the semifinals, winning two of her three matches in straight sets, while Polakova earned three consecutive three-set victories to advance to the semis. Playing on opposite sides of the bracket, Polakova fell to top-seeded Amahee Charrier of Nevada, while Viriant came up short against No. 2 seed Chan.
In the third-place match, the two Broncos elected to flip a coin to decide the winner, with Polakova ultimately taking third and Viriant finishing fourth.
Quotable
"This tournament was a really solid showing for us. Having two players finish in the top four spots in the conference speaks to our team this year and the level we are working to achieve. There were really great performances by all of our players throughout the event that gives us great positives to build on. There is still plenty to learn from our group which is really exciting, and we'll be relentless in pushing that development this fall." -Boise State Women's Tennis Head Coach Beck Roghaar
