Six sport programs with perfect scores and Bronco football with second highest in all FBS
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State Athletics matched its all-time best NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) according to data released by the NCAA on Wednesday. The Broncos recorded a four-class average GSR of 96 percent which ties the department's all-time score and once again claims the top overall score in the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos have led the conference each of the last four years and 96 percent remains the highest score in conference history.
The latest figures include the cohort that entered college during the 2018-19 academic year.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes who continue to make the most of their time representing the Blue and Orange by excelling both in the classroom and in competition," said Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State Director of Athletics. "We are continuing to be BAR RAISERS in our academic success, and our student-athletes are helping lead the way in showing what it means to be a Bronco. We are so proud to see the success they've achieved."
The overall department score of 96 percent is the third highest score in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) this year.
Sport programs with perfect scores include women's basketball, beach volleyball, men's cross country/track & field, women's golf, gymnastics, and softball.
Boise State football's score of 98 percent is the second highest score in all of FBS and one of the top football graduation rates in FBS history. Only eight universities have scored higher.
Sport programs that set or tied their record include women's basketball, men's cross country/track & field, women's cross country/track & field, football, women's golf, gymnastics, and softball. Both men's tennis and volleyball secured their second highest score in program history.
Although beach volleyball has not reached the status of a full cohort, by NCAA standards, every student-athlete receiving assistance has graduated.
"I also want to thank our staff and especially the Academic Services team for their tremendous dedication and care they show our Bronco student-athletes every day," said Dickey. "The academic success reflects the strong culture and support system we've built for every Bronco student-athlete."
Since the first NCAA GSR release in 2002, Boise State Athletics has improved or tied the previous year's score for 23 consecutive years and raised its GSR 30 percentage points in the process.
Each year, the NCAA publicly announces the GSR of all Division I institutions. The graduation-rate data is based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, the most recent version including freshmen scholarship student-athletes who entered college during the 2018-19 academic year.
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it more accurate and provides a complete look at student-athlete success.
