Broncos Drop Season Opener

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State dropped its season opener, 79-78, to Hawai'i Pacific on Monday night at ExtraMile Arena.

Boise State (0-1) collectively shot 41.8 percent from the field and 10-for-33 from beyond the arc. Hawai'i Pacific (1-0) led for over 27 minutes in the game en route to a one-point victory.

Four players in blue and orange scored in double figures and the team was led by Dylan Andrews, who posted a team-high 15 points and nine assists in his Broncos debut. Freshman Spencer Ahrens tallied 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting in his first collegiate action.

Drew Fielder notched 13 points and seven rebounds, while Andrew Meadow recorded 10 points and eight boards in 28 minutes of game action. Aginaldo Neto added seven points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench.

Joshua West made nine of his 16 field goal attempts and paced all players with 23 points. Quentin Meza had 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, with Quinton McCullough and Josh Niusulu each scoring 12.

Hawai'i Pacific, who led by as many as six points in the first half, scored eight of the game's first 10 points. Benefiting from 16 first-half points by West, the Sharks led for over 14 minutes in the first half.

The Broncos had eight players who cracked the scoring column in the opening 20 minutes, but collectively, the team shot 36 percent (12-for-33) from the field. Grabbing its first lead of the game at the 8:08 mark, Boise State managed only a two-point twice.

Contributing to 16 bench points in the frame, Dominic Parolin and Ahrens paced the Broncos with six points apiece. Neto tallied the other four while snatching two rebounds.

With 1:07 left to play in the half, Niusulu knocked down his first three-pointer of the game, giving Hawai'i Pacific a one-point advantage. The Sharks made 16 of their 33 field goals and led, 38-37, at the intermission.

Halfway through the second half, Boise State grabbed its largest lead of the night. At the 9:22 mark, Ahrens poured in a long ball which gave the Broncos a three-point lead.

Trailing by seven with just over three minutes in the game, Boise State used an 8-2 run to trim the deficit to one. The Broncos had a couple opportunities to win the game in the final seconds, but didn't cash in.
