BOISE, Idaho – The Detroit Lions selected Boise State defensive end Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, making the All-American the first Egyptian player drafted into the NFL. Hassanein was the 196th overall pick, with the Lions selecting him as the 20th pick in the sixth round.

Hassanein was a two-time All-Mountain West first team selection and a 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America second team pick. As a senior, he was tabbed College Football Network All-America honorable mention and was a finalist for Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year.

Hassanein played in 48 games during his Boise State career, totaling 24.0 sacks, fourth-most in program history. In 2024, he tallied 9.5 sacks, ranking third in the Mountain West and tying for 16th in the nation. He also posted 15.5 tackles for loss, tied for third in the conference and 17th in the FBS. The captain led the league in quarterback hits (17) and total pressures (62), ranking third and fifth in the country, respectively.

Behind Hassanein, the Bronco defense totaled 55 sacks, most in the FBS. The unit averaged 7.9 TFLs per game, third-most in the country. In 2023, Hassanein recorded 12.5 sacks, ranking second in the MW, sixth in the NCAA and sixth in program history. He tallied at least 0.5 sacks in nine-straight games, the longest FBS streak since 2015.

Hassanein is the 74th player all-time to be drafted to the NFL out of Boise State and 45th since 2000, the most in the MW. He was the fourth MW player drafted this year, joining teammate Ashton Jeanty, as well as Tory Horton (Colorado State) and Jalen Royals (Utah State). He is the fifth Boise State player drafted by the Lions, joining Jim McMillan (1975), Jim Meeks (1976), Gerald Alexander (2007) and Titus Young (2011). He is the 12th Bronco to go in the sixth round, a list that includes former teammates Scott Matlock and JL Skinner.
