Boise State Wins First Mountain West Championship in Program History

LAS VEGAS – Freshman Masa Viriant delivered another clutch performance to clinch Boise State women's tennis' first Mountain West Championship title at the Credit Union 1 2025 MW Tennis Championship in Las Vegas.

With the win, the Broncos secured an automatic berth to the 2025 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament, which begins May 2. It marks Boise State's first NCAA appearance since 2010.

The championship victory is the program's first in the Mountain West and seventh overall conference title. The Broncos also made history as the first team seeded No. 4 or lower to win the MW title since No. 6 TCU defeated No. 5 San Diego State in 2010.

Sophomore Zdena Safarov was named MW Tournament MVP after going undefeated (3-0) at No. 1 singles and picking up an additional victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.

For the second straight match, the Broncos found themselves trailing by one after losing the doubles point early.

Boise State responded quickly in singles, regaining the lead after straight-set victories on both courts one and four. Zdena Safarova dominated UNLV's Cindy Hu 6-0, 6-2 at the top spot, while Paula Schaefer earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 4 position.

Up 2-1, the Broncos extended their lead when freshman Maya Dutta topped UNLV's Veronika Kliuch 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. UNLV answered with a win on court three, putting the outcome in the hands of the final two courts.

At No. 6, Viriant dropped the first set and trailed 3-0 in the second. Undeterred, she stormed back to win 12 of the next 17 games, ultimately earning a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win, and the MW title for the Broncos.
