BOISE, Idaho – Boise State running back Sire Gaines was named to the Comeback Player of the Year Watch List, College Sports Communicators jointly announced with The Associated Press and Fiesta Sports Foundation. Gaines is one of 75 student-athletes on the 2025 watch list, a group that includes three Mountain West players. The redshirt freshman is joined by Fresno State's Camryn Bracha and Josiah Freeman.

As a true freshman, Gaines appeared in three games, totaling 156 yards and one touchdown on 20 rushes. He added three receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown before suffering a season-ending injury against Portland State. He earned MW Freshman of the Week honors after his performance in Boise State's win at Georgia Southern, where he tallied 154 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 15 touches. A native of Perris, California, Gaines is one of two freshmen on the 2025 Doak Walker Award Watch List. He was named Preseason All-MW First Team by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
