BOISE, Idaho — Boise State opened its Mountain West Conference season in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with a 2-0 setback to San Jose State on Monday night at the Boise State Esports Arena.
The Broncos fielded a lineup of Alexis Arenas (Starmis), Nolan Genna (Melfor), Eric Labastida (Mada), and Tyler Wills (Supersonic), with Overwatch 2 veteran Jonathan Foraker (Clear) making his first-ever SSBU appearance for Boise State. Despite the fresh energy, the Broncos ran into a Spartan squad that has consistently been one of the strongest programs in the conference.
The match followed the traditional best-of-three crew battle format. In the opening round, San Jose State struck early, with the Spartans' Koda took down three Broncos, before Mada managed to halt the run with a pair of KOs. The rally ended quickly, however, as SJSU closed out game one with a win.
Round two belonged to SJSU's Lammers, who put together one of the night's standout individual performances. Lammers eliminated all four Boise State players while losing just a single stock, sealing the 2-0 sweep.
The loss drops Boise State to 0-1 in conference play, while San Jose State, the defending Mountain West Champions, continued its reputation as a perennial contender.
