BOISE, Idaho – Derek Schouman, an Eagle, Idaho, native and former Boise State and NFL tight end, will raise the Blue Chaos flag before the Broncos' final home nonconference matchup against App State, Saturday evening.
"I'm humbled and honored to be considered," Schouman said. "Any capacity to be involved and be a part of Bronco Nation is an honor, let alone given the chance to do it with my family in a stadium so special to me."
A two-time all-conference tight end, Schouman (2003-06) hauled in the crucial fourth-down touchdown in overtime of Boise State's 2007 Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma. The score set the stage for Ian Johnson's Statue of Liberty game-winner, with Schouman finishing as the Broncos' top receiver with eight catches for 72 yards.
"Boise State will always hold a special place in my heart," Schouman said. "I grew up watching the Broncos and always wanted to play here, so when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it and never looked back. On top of that, my time here was magical—winning seasons, memorable bowl games, countless unforgettable memories, friendships and so much more. Being a part of the Bronco family is special. It always has been and always will be."
Over his four years at Boise State, Schouman recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, spending three seasons with them before also competing for the St. Louis Rams.
Following his playing career, Schouman returned to Boise as a quality control assistant in 2016, as well as an offensive line graduate assistant.
"Boise State is special because it's been built on the ultimate blue-collar, underdog attitude," Schouman said. "Success here didn't happen overnight—it's been earned, brick by brick. What makes Boise State and its people unique is that we don't just preach culture—we live it. From Coach Hawkins to Coach Pete, and now Coach D, it's all about culture. Spencer has done an admirable job of carrying the torch with the changing landscape of college football. He's the kind of leader I'd go into battle with."
