BOISE, Idaho — Boise State Esports opened its title defense Monday night with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Syracuse in the Broncos' first home match of the season. The defending national champions entered play off a bye week, and while many expected a sweep, Syracuse pushed the series to the limit.
Game 1 set the tone for a surprising night. Boise State (1-0 PEC) struck first, but Syracuse (0-2 PEC) quickly answered. The two sides traded chances until overtime, when Cade Hall (Wuzy) delivered the game-winner to put the Broncos ahead 1-0.
Game 2 showed the visitors' resilience. Syracuse tightened its defense and slowed Boise State's attack, but late goals from Emiliano Flores (Durtho) helped the Broncos brake through. Despite a reply from Syracuse, Boise State held on for a 2-1 win and a 2-0 series lead.
Momentum shifted in Game 3. Syracuse capitalized on defensive lapses and constant pressure, tallying four goals while holding the Broncos scoreless. Their physical play, including repeated demolitions, disrupted rotations and stalled Boise State's attack. Game 4 followed a similar script. Though the Broncos regrouped defensively, they struggled to generate offense and again failed to score. Syracuse managed two goals, evening the series at 2-2 and forcing a decisive fifth game.
The finale lived up to the billing. Both defenses held firm, keeping the scoreboard empty through regulation thanks to two saves each from Durtho and Preston Ferrante (Prstn). Nearly three minutes into overtime, Wuzy broke the deadlock with a clean finish, lifting Boise State to a 1-0 victory in the match clincher. The narrow win moves Boise State to 1-0, while Syracuse falls to 0-2. The result underscored the Broncos' championship resolve and the growing competitiveness across the league.
