BOISE, Idaho — Boise State Esports closed Week 1 of the Power Esports Conference Spring Season on Thursday night with a 2–0 loss to Nebraska in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, wrapping up a full week of competition between the two programs across multiple titles.
The matchup came with several new variables for the Broncos. Compounding the challenge, Boise State finished last semester 2–5 in conference play, while Nebraska entered the spring off a 5–2 fall campaign — adding pressure to an already demanding matchup.
Despite the result, the Broncos showed encouraging signs of growth and competitiveness throughout the series.
The opening round remained tightly contested, with extended exchanges and several momentum swings. Nebraska applied sustained pressure late, forcing Boise State into difficult defensive positions. Gookies anchored the lineup in the closing moments, battling through multiple stocks before Nebraska ultimately secured the round.
In Round 2, Boise State adjusted its approach, shuffling player order and introducing Starmies into the lineup in place of Clear. The changes produced cleaner engagements and sharper timing, and the round featured some of the closest sequences of the night. Nebraska, however, remained composed in key moments and closed out the final battle to secure the sweep.
The night concluded with SuperSonic taking the stage, bringing energy and creativity to the final matchup. While the result didn't swing Boise State's way, SuperSonic delivered one of the night's most entertaining performances, pushing the pace and closing the series with confidence and composure.
The loss drops Boise State to 0–1 in the spring split, but the performance reflected a team in transition rather than retreat. With new leadership, evolving roles, and a full semester ahead, the Broncos remain focused on development and upward momentum.
