Broncos snatch three map thriller over Utah

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State Valorant opened PEC Spring play with a hard-earned 2–1 series win over the University of Utah, responding after a slow start to take control on Haven and Corrode. Behind balanced fragging and improved mid-round discipline, the Broncos secured an important early-season conference victory.

The series opened on Breeze, where Utah struck first. Boise State generated early pressure but struggled to convert opening duels into sustained control. Utah capitalized on mid-round gaps and closed the map behind strong individual performances, edging out the Broncos in the opener. Marshall Hainer (Daimyo) led Boise State with 24 kills, while Peter Mittelbrun (Skies) added 20, but Utah's ability to trade efficiently allowed them to secure the early advantage.

Boise State answered decisively on Haven. Wyatt Morrison (Master) set the tone with 23 kills and consistent entry pressure, while Mittelbrun and Hainer combined to stabilize late rounds. The Broncos played with sharper pacing, limiting Utah's ability to rotate freely and closing the map with disciplined site control. Boise State's deaths dropped significantly in key rounds, reflecting improved spacing and cleaner execution.

The series came down to Corrode, where Boise State delivered its most complete performance of the night. Morrison again paced the attack with 20 kills, while Hainer and Mittelbrun provided steady support in both opening engagements and late-round cleanups. Kosmos Sutter (Kos) posted one of his most efficient stat lines of the series, finishing with 14 kills to 11 deaths, helping Boise State maintain numerical advantages throughout the map.

Utah remained competitive behind Ashton Chan's 22-kill effort, but Boise State's ability to close rounds after gaining an edge proved decisive. The Broncos controlled tempo in the latter stages, denying Utah opportunities to force extended retakes and sealing the map — and the series — with composure.

The 2–1 win gives Boise State a strong start to the PEC Spring Season and establishes an early benchmark for the roster's growth. With cleaner mid-rounds and more consistent conversion, the Broncos showed the ability to adjust and respond under pressure.

"There were some good rounds and some rounds we need to look at," said Head Coach Doc Haskell. "Utah is a blue blood, the first FBS school with an esports program and an incredible director. A win against them is not trivial. But to get where we expect to get, we need to win more than 500 rounds this season and if we build on what we did tonight, we can hit that goal."
