Lane Brace Leads Broncos to Victory

SAN DIEGO – Boise State soccer earned a 4-1 victory over San Diego State on Thursday night, opening Pac-12 play with a dominant performance highlighted by junior Mia Lane's first career brace.

The Broncos (9-1-1, 1-0-0) scored three goals in the second half to pull away from the Aztecs (6-3-1, 0-1-0) and secure their first conference win of the season.

Boise State came out attacking, with Jillian Anderson recording the first shot on goal of the match just 31 seconds into the game. Lane opened the scoring in the 14th minute, winning a foot race against three San Diego State defenders before finding the back of the net for an unassisted goal.

The Aztecs responded in the 44th minute when Victoria Miller converted a penalty kick following a handball in the box, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1. The two teams were even in both shots and saves at the break, with each recording seven shots and three saves.

Boise State regained the lead in the 69th minute when Campbell Wilson found Lane, who finished the opportunity for her second goal of the night and the first brace of her career. Just two minutes later, Wilson added a goal of her own. After a foul just outside the box, Wilson converted the ensuing free kick to extend the Broncos' lead to 3-1.

San Diego State was reduced to 10 players in the 73rd minute when Lily Boudet received her second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card. Boise State added one more goal in the 79th minute. After being fouled in the box, Olivia Collins stepped up and converted the resulting penalty kick to put the Broncos ahead 4-1.

Ava de Leest recorded a season-high seven saves to help Boise State secure its ninth win of the season.

Quotables
  • "Matches like this, against top opponents like that, take more than just skill and physical preparation," head coach Jim Thomas said. "They require the mental resolve to overcome the adversity an opponent presents. At halftime, the look in our players' eyes as we prepared to come back onto the field showed me something I haven't seen in a very long time at Boise State. It was a group of players with a completely different approach and one that would not be denied. I couldn't be happier to be a part of their journey. I'm very excited to see where this may lead."

What's Next
  • Boise State will return home for its Pac-12 home opener against Gonzaga on Oct. 4. Kickoff at Boas Soccer Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT and will be live streamed on the Pac-12 YouTube.
