Broncos Claim Three Victories at Carolina Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Boise State recorded three wins, including a pair of sweeps, at the Carolina Challenge over the weekend. The Broncos (7-5) defeated College of Charleston, Jacksonville and UNC Wilmington, with the sole loss coming at the hands of No. 20 South Carolina in a tightly-contested 3-2 defeat.
Ava Anderson and Addison Wolden finished 3-1 at the two-day event to reach 29 career victories, tying the program record held by Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis for most wins by a pair in program history. Elsewhere, Allyson Alden and Serena van der Made went 4-0 on the weekend, improving to 9-3 on the season and a perfect 8-0 mark from the No. 2 position.
The dual against South Carolina was intense from the beginning. On court two, Alden and van der Made outlasted the Gamecocks' No. 2 duo 25-23 for a first-set victory. After falling 14-21 in the second set, the duo survived two potential match points to win 17-15 and put the Broncos on the board. On court four, Addison Moss and Elli Wolthuis withstood a first-set defeat to pull off a three-set victory of their own to give Boise State a 2-0 lead.
South Carolina responded with a pair of victories on courts five and three to send the dual's outcome to the top court. Anderson and Wolden claimed the first set but lost the next two by three points each as the Gamecocks came away with the win.
The Broncos responded Friday evening against UNC Wilmington, with the Blue and Orange jumping out to a 2-0 lead following straight-set victories from the first flight. Avery Bowidowicz and Lily Patock clinched the Boise State victory with a convincing win on court five. Anderson and Wolden joined Avery Allen and Keira Demirjian with victories to complete the Boise State sweep.
Alden and van der Made started Saturday's action against Jacksonville with a straight-set win to give Boise State a 1-0 lead, but the Dolphins evened the score with a win from the No. 4 slot. Anderson and Wolden came back from a first-set loss to win in three from the top court, while Allen and Demirjian won on court three to clinch the victory.
Boise State cruised to a 5-0 sweep in its final dual of the weekend, with all but one Bronco pair winning in straight sets over College of Charleston.
