BOISE, Idaho – After a successful five-year tenure at Boise State, Justin Shults is leaving the Treasure Valley.
Â
"Justin notified me on Monday he was stepping down as our head softball coach to become the associate head coach role at Arkansas," Boise State Director of Athletics Jeramiah Dickey said. "Justin has done a great job over the last five years, including winning a conference title, being named conference coach of the year, and leading our program to some of the biggest wins in school history. We wish him and his family the best of luck in the new opportunity.
Â
"Thanks to the foundation laid by him, our staff and our student-athletes, we know we will find the next great head coach for our program through a national search. You come to Boise State to compete for championships, and we fully expect to do that under new leadership in the Pac-12! It's always What's Next!"
Â
Boise State tied the school record with 40 victories in 2022 in Shults's first year and earned the highest ranking in school history at No. 23.
Â
The Broncos captured the Mountain West regular season title in 2023 and finished runner-up in the 2024 MW Championship.
Â
In 2025, Boise State set over 60 school records. This past spring, the Broncos earned wins over No. 10 Stanford and No. 14 Ole Miss, the two highest-ranked opponents defeated in school history.
Â
Shults posted a 167-102 record and his .621 winning percentage is the best in program history. He coached a pair of All-Americans at Boise State.
Â
Terra McGowan, who has been an assistant under Shults for two seasons, has been named interim head coach.
