Heather Sower enters her 24th season as an assistant at her alma mater, and 31st overall as a collegiate coach. She serves as the position coach for Bronco post players on the court, in addition to overseeing the program’s internal operations and opponent scheduling.
Â
Sower also holds the unique distinction of being the only person to be a member, whether as a player or coach, of all seven Boise State teams to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. Sower was a player on the Broncos’ first NCAA Tournament team in 1993-94, and has been an assistant coach on the subsequent six NCAA Tournament qualifiers (2007, 2015, 2017-20).
Â
She has been a part of 477 victories as a member of the Blue and Orange, garnering 75 wins as a player and 402 games as a coach. She earned her 400th career victory as an assistant coach with the Broncos against Wyoming on Feb. 18.
Â
As a member of the Boise State coaching staff, she has helped guide the program to 14 winning seasons, seven 20-win campaigns, four regular-season championships, six conference tournament titles and eight postseason tournament berths (2007 NCAA, 2008 WNIT, 2014 WBI, 2015 NCAA, and 2017-20 NCAA).
Â
At Boise State, Sower has coached one player who earned both WBCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors (Deanna Weaver), in addition to helping coach Bronco players to 42 all-conference honors, three conference newcomers of the year, two conference freshmen of the year, six conference tournament MVPs and 129 academic all-conference honors.
Â
Sower spent seven years coaching in the NAIA and NCAA Division II ranks with the College of Idaho (1995-2001) and Regis University (Colo.) (2001-02), respectively.
Â
At Regis, Sower helped guide the Rangers to their most successful campaign in program history as they finished with a 21-8 overall record and advanced to their first NCAA Division II Tournament in 2002.
Â
Sower began her coaching career as an assistant under Todd Corman at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, when the school reinstated the women’s basketball program for the 1995-96 season. She spent six seasons (1995-96 to 2000-01) with the Coyotes, helping guide the program to a top-10 national ranking and to the 2000 NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight, as well as, a runner-up finish at the 2001 NAIA National Tournament. The 2001 Yotes were inducted into the College of Idaho Hall of Fame in 2017. While she was at the College of Idaho, the Coyotes received three NAIA National Tournament bids in six years and accumulated an overall record of 123-60.
Â
Sower played four years of women’s basketball at Boise State, earning All-Big Sky Conference honors as a senior. She was also named to the 1994 Big Sky All-Academic Team. Sower, who served as a captain, won team awards for best defense and hustle in her final season as a Bronco. She helped lead Boise State to a top-20 ranking, still the only Associated Press Top-25 team in program history, and an appearance in the 1994 NCAA Tournament her senior year. Boise State captured the Big Sky Conference regular-season crown during Sower’s sophomore and senior campaigns.
