BOISE STATE TENURE (2009-present)
Candy Murphy is in her 16th season with the Bronco volleyball program and was promoted to associate head coach in the spring of 2022. Murphy's responsibilities for the program in addition to coaching include: recruiting coordinator, scouting opponents, ordering equipment and apparel, and training the middle blockers. She was also the director of operations for the beach volleyball program for five years (2014-18).
Murphy, who joined the Bronco program in August of 2009, now has 23 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, as well as extensive experience in coaching and directing Junior Olympic club teams.
During her first 16 years with the Broncos, Murphy has helped guide the Broncos to winning records in 13 of 16 seasons, four with 20-plus victories. The Broncos have also advanced to postseason tournaments four times, including the first two NCAA Tournament berths in program history in 2016 and 2021.
The program has accomplished a lot with Murphy's assistance: seven honorable-mention All-American honors, seven AVCA All-Region and five honorable-mention, 39 all-conference honors and six honorable mention, two conference players of the year, four MW Freshman of the Year, two MW Newcomer of the Year, 16 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team award winners, one conference all-freshman team member and 111 academic all-conference honors.
PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE
Began coaching club while playing in college. In addition to coaching two all-Americans as a club coach, her best team finish was fifth place in open division at Junior Olympics. Currently works as the administrator for the Boise Valley Volleyball Club, as well as serving as a coach.
In her first experience as an assistant women's volleyball coach at the NCAA Division I level, Murphy was a part of the coaching staff at Sacramento State for nine seasons (1993-99, 2001-02). There she was able to help her team to three Big Sky Conference titles, three post-season appearances, 15 All-Big Sky honors, two Big Sky MVPs, and 16 Academic All-Big Sky awards.
During her hiatus from Sacramento State, she was a volunteer assistant coach for one season at Stanford University. During the 2000 season, the Cardinal were the NCAA runner-up, PAC-10 Champions and posted a 31-3 record.
Murphy’s first collegiate coaching position was at her alma mater University of California, Davis where she was an assistant coach for the men's team from 1991-93.
COLLEGIATE PLAYING EXPERIENCE
An outstanding collegiate player, Murphy was a member of the UC Davis team where she was named to the AVCA All-America First Team in 1991 and 1992. At the time of her graduation she held the school records in career kills, career attacks, career hitting percentage and career service aces. In 1998 Murphy was inducted into the UC Davis Hall of Fame.
PERSONAL
Murphy earned her bachelor's degree in Human Development from UC Davis in 1993. Murphy has two children, Jackson and Katherine.
