Cantlin Makes 70-yard Dash to Open Fray; Teachers Take to Air with Walden, Fullback, Doing Good Job Tossing Pigskin; Place Kicks Tried
BOISE, Idaho – Revenge, all the sweeter because it was hard earned, was achieved by the Broncos of Boise Junior College Friday afternoon at Public School Field when they subdued the Eastern Oregon Normal School eleven from La Grande, 12 to 6.
The Broncos scored in the opening period, saw the score tied in the second frame, took a lead with another touchdown in the third period and then held the Teachers until the final gun. Last year the Teachers had trounced the Broncos, 18 to 0.
With the field muddy, both teams took to the air with forward and lateral passes that kept a small crowd gasping for the entire game. In addition the Broncos tried two placekicks but failed to score in either attempt.
The passing of Walden, Oregon Normal fullback, was the high light of the contest. He started with a pass on the first play and kept it up throughout, being largely responsible for his team's making 12 first downs to eight for the Broncos.
The Broncos drew first blood early in the first quarter after an exchange of punts. The Teachers kicked to Cantlin on his 30-yard stripe. Cantlin waited until the ball stopped bouncing, then scooped it from beneath diving Oregon players and started running down the sidelines. Perfect blocking by his teammates opened the way and he completed a 70-yard gallop to cross the Oregon goal. The kick for extra point failed.
Toward the end of the first period the Broncos again drove deep to the Oregon 16-yard line, only to be thrown back to the 22. Shaw then went in for Cantlin and tried a place kick but the pigskin fell short of the bars.
Gus Urresti, Bronco fullback, who has been out on injuries several weeks, went in during the second period and promptly snagged an Oregon pass.
The ball was lost on a fumble later, however, and from then on it was Oregon's quarter. The Teachers drove to the Bronco five-yard marker before being held for downs. After Boise kicked to freedom the Teachers started filling the air with passes and reached the Bronco two-yard line from where Walden pushed it over to tie the score. The kick for point failed. The ball was back in midfield at the half.
In the third period Kidd, Bronco halfback, intercepted a pass and promptly tossed it to Nalley, who carried it deep into Oregon territory. Line drives carried the pigskin to the Teacher four, from where Cantlin circled right end to score. The kick was again short and the Broncos led, 12 to 6.
From then on the game settled down to passing by Oregon and line drives by the Broncos. Late in the fourth period the Broncos reached the Teacher 19-yard line and Shaw tried his second place kick. There was too much mud and weight, however, the ball falling far short of the goal posts.
The game ended with Boise intercepting a pass on her own 45-yard line.
