Broncos Clash with Basler’s C. of I. Eleven; Kickoff at 2 o’clock Pits Rival Squads at Public School Field; Both After Decisive Victory
BOISE, Idaho – College football of 1935 makes its bow to Boise at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Public School Field when the Boise Junior College Broncos meet the College of Idaho Coyotes.
Â
The game is sponsored by the Boise Junior Chamber of Commerce and offers more unique possibilities than any fray scheduled here in many a moon.
Â
In the first place, there is intense rivalry between the two schools. The Junior College has only been in existence and offering a football team for two years. The players are therefore anxious to make a name for themselves in the sport world as soon as possible.
Â
Second, the Junior college coach, Max Eiden, is a former player under Loren Basler, mentor of the Coyotes. This angle offers the old problem of whether a pupil has progressed far enough to surpass the master. A good showing on the part of the Junior College, even though defeated, would be a feather in Eiden's cap; likewise Basler, with almost an entire team back from last year at the College of Idaho, should run up a big score.
Â
The third angle is that brother will face brother when the kickoff starts the fray today. On the Bronco squad at tackle is Clarence Weber – on the Coyote line at guard is Lawrence Weber. That puts them face to face and they are extremely anxious, according to advance reports, to renew the scraps so common to brothers in childhood. Besides, the entire Weber family, in a quandry as to which team to cheer for, will be here from Parma to see the game and choose up sides.
Â
Fourth, since Basler is a former Boise High School coach, the Junior College has agreed tole the College of Idaho boys take the home side of the clubhouse today. The Broncos will take the side usually allotted to visiting teams.
Â
"We want to make Coach Basler feel at home – until the game starts," said the Broncos.
Â
Coach Basler of Caldwell, after spending a week relating in dramatic detail how injuries have been stalking his team, announced Friday night he will put most of his regulars in the field this afternoon. Eiden, on the other hand, says his team has suffered injuries but that every lad will be out craving action, injuries or no.
Â
"We'll give everything we've got," said Eiden Friday night. "We ask no quarter and are not going to give any. Whatever the score at the end of the game, that's the score."
Â
The Broncos have spent a good part of the week working on a defense for passes, having an idea that the Coyotes will take to the air frequently. The Broncos have supplemented regular practice with chalk talks at 7:30 each morning. With only two weeks to work and most of them green men, the Broncos have concentrated and pointed for this one game.
Â
Starting Lineup
Â
Eiden expects his line, from tackle to tackle, will average 190 pounds to the man this afternoon. The probable starting lineup will be Stoddard and Nalley at halves, Urresti at fullback and Shaw, Cannon or Shelton at quarterback. Ends will be Lippa and Uranga, tackles, Carpenter and Weber; guards, Stanley and Jennings; center, Morgan.
Â
Officials will be Huck Breshears, referee; Ed. Hoshaw, umpire; Bill Gartin, head linesman; Johnb Bauer and Doc Irwin, time keepers.
Â
College Ready
Â
CALDWELL, Idaho – With indications that their starting lineup will be at or near first-team strength, College of Idaho Coyotes prepared Friday for their first away-from-home game of the season, a Saturday afternoon battle with Boise Junior College at Boise.
Â
Earl McReynolds, right tackle, who suffered a minor leg injury in the opening game last Friday night, probably will get a starting call at Boise Saturday afternoon, Coach Loren H. Basler said in revealing his starting team lineup.
Â
But Carl Smith, quarterback, and Norman Esson, guard, definitely will not be in the game, Basler said. Esson last year earned all-star honors in Northwest Conference play.
Â
Jess Swan, second choice as quarterback on the all-conference team last year, will call signals for the Coyotes against the Broncos Sunday afternoon. Bob Tidwell will take Tom Wilson's place at fullback, Basler said, while Bobby Hoobler, former Boise High School star, and Tom Gill, sparkplug of the Boise High School team of two years ago, will be teamed at the two halfback posts.
Â
"Curley" Whelchel, high school star at Caldwell three years ago, will get into the game when Hoobler goes out of the lineup and the two are expected to bear the brunt of the Coyotes' ball packing activity during the afternoon.
Â
In the line Basler will start "Mebs" Thompson at center, Bill Kyle and Lawrence Weber at guards, Ray McManimie and Earl McReynolds at tackles and "Tub" Hayman and John Glasby at ends.
Â
Of the linemen the heaviest are the two ends. Hayman weighs 189 pounds while Glasby is close behind at 195. Kyle weighs 188, McReynolds 185, McManimie 180, Weber 170 and Thompson 160.
Â
Gill, left-handed halfback, is heftiest man in the Coyotes' starting backfield, tipping the scales at 175. Tidwell weighs 162 and Swan 160 while tiny Bobby Hoobler is more than 30 points lighter at 128.
