Coyotes Build Strong Margin in Final Half; Junior College Holds Tally to 6-0 in First Quarter but Wilts Under Drives of Invading Bazmen

BOISE, Idaho – With a line that could open a path almost at will and ball toters that new how to find the way through, the College of Idaho Coyotes Saturday afternoon won a 31-0 victory over the Boise Junior College Broncos.

The game, at Public School Field, was the first college game this season for Boise and the first clash between the two schools. A crowd of approximately 2300 persons saw the fray, staged under sponsorship of the Boise Junior Chamber of Commerce.

First Half Close

The College of Idaho Pep Band came to Boise early in the day from Caldwell and presented a street concert. Then, with a band from Boise Junior College, more music was offered before and after the game at the gridiron and during lulls of play.

The Coyotes proved superior in nearly all phases of the game but met a stubborn resistance, especially during the first half, that kept the final result in doubt until the final quarter. Even then, with only minutes to play, the Broncos unleashed a passing attack that went half the length of the field before the final gun sounded.

Basler Uses Many Subs

The Broncos held the Coyotes scoreless in the first quarter and allowed only one touchdown in the second, the tally being expedited by a penalty that placed the ball on the Bronco one-yard line. A second touchdown was shoved across in the third quarter and three more in the final period. During the game Coach Basler of the Coyotes sent in enough substitutes for nearly three full teams. Under this barrage of new talent, though Bideganeta, Hoobler, Milligan and some of the other lightweights, the Broncos finally wilted and gave way.

Both elevens showed ability at blocking and tackling, but the Coyotes time after time made good yardage through the Bronco line and opened up with passing attacks that netted more distance. Passes were directly responsible for at least one of the touchdowns.

Versatile Offense

The Coyotes were also able to present a more varied and deceptive offense, mixing laterals, switchbacks, reverses and straight power plays that only breaks of the game enabled the Broncos to check.

With Swan guiding the team, the Coyotes tried half a dozen or more passes the first period, some successful and others incomplete. One of them, Swan to Wilson, brought a first down on the Bronco 17-yard line as the quarter ended.

Coyotes, largely through the line plunging by Swan, pushed the pigskin to the Bronco six stripe. On a reverse play, Smith to Gill, the latter fumbled and the Broncos recovered on their own 11. Shaw punted out of bounds on his own 47 to save the day.

Swan Scores First

But the relief was short lived. A pass, Smith to Gill, netted 11 yards for the Coyotes; Swan ripped through right tackle to the 12, where he was downed by Morgan, Bronco center. Smith clipped off another four yards and the Junior College was then penalized to the one-yard marker for unnecessary roughness. The Broncos stiffened and held on the next play. Swan then plunged through right tackle and drew first blood for the Coyotes. His kick for extra point hit the upright.

Swan was hurt a short time later and left the game. Cantlin, substitute quarterback for the Juniors, heaved some passes with little effect during the rest of the quarter. The half ended with Caldwell in possession on her own 46-yard line after bringing back a punt from the 32.

Whelchel Breaks Away

The middle of the third period Whelchel brought the stands to their feet with a 30-yard run through right tackle, just after he had returned a punt from the Coyote 9 to 32 marker. The Coyotes were penalized 15 yards for holding. A 25-yard pass, Hayman to Thompson, brought the Coyotes back up. Gill got away to the Bronco 13, where he was downed by Stoddard. From there Whelchel went spinning through the right tackle to score. Thompson's pass for the extra point was no good and the Coyotes led, 12 to 0.

Basler sent in some of his lightweight backfield men for the next kickoff. A series of switchbacks and reverses but the ball on the Bronco 13 marker as the period ended.

From then on the Broncos wilted under the strain and were unable, in spite of determined efforts, to curb their fresher rivals. Hoobler packed the ball to the 9-yard line. Bideganeta was smothered after three yards' gain and Thompson hit the center for three more, making it first down and three yards to go.

Lightweights Score

Hoobler was tackled by Nalley. On a switchback, Bideganeta took the ball from Hoobler and went over. Hoobler's kickw as blocked. The tally was 18 to 0.

A few minutes after the next kickoff Stoddard's punt was partially blocked and the Coyotes started a drive from the Bronco 44 that ended in another touchdown. Hayman put the ball in scoring position after receiving a pass from Thompson and being tackled by Stoddard. On the next play he circled end and raced across the line standing up. Gill crushed over the line for the extra point. Score: 25 to 0.

Almost an entire new team came in for the College of Idaho at this point.

Recover Fumbled Punt

Thompson punted a few minutes later and it was fumbled by a Bronco player in the shadow of his own goal post. Rawls of the College of Idaho recovered it on the Bronco 4-yard line. Bideganita carried it to the 3-yard line and then the Coyotes were penalized 15 yards for pushing, which gave the Broncos a respite. The next play caught them flat-footed, however, Biledeau, Coyote substitute, catching a 19-yard pass from Thompson over the goal line. Bideganita's kick for point was short. Score: 31 to 0.

The Broncos came back with a series of hair-raising passes, Shaw to Kidd, substitute halfback, that brought the ball to the Coyote 43, then Shaw ripped for 13 yards to the 30 around the right of the line. Kidd received the next pass on the Caldwell 25 and there the Bronco threat faded. The Coyotes stiffened and threw the Broncos for heavy losses on the next two plays, making it fourth down and 20 yards to go. Shaw hit the left end of the line to put the ball on the Coyote 33 marker as the gun boomed the game's finish.
