Swimming and Diving Sign Two To National Letters of Intent

Head coach Kristin Hill announced the signing of two new members to the Boise State swimming and diving team. Stevie Hughey and Jen Cahill both signed national letters of intent to join the Broncos for the 2009-10 school year.

Hughey will join the team from Bakersfield, Calif., where she has been a high school standout throughout her career at Frontier High School. Hughey has been an All-Area selection in her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons with her senior season upcoming this spring. She is already a school record holder in three events at Frontier, including the 50 free, 100 free and 200 IM. On top of being an All-Area selection, Hughey is currently the Valley champion in the 50 free.

“We know her best swimming is ahead of her,” said Hill. “Stevie will strengthen our sprint freestyle core, and she also brings speed in the IM which will be great for depth throughout the season and in our championship season.”

In addition to her athletic achievements, Hughey is also an academic standout. Entering her senior year, she is ranked first in her class in terms of GPA. She has also been a member of the California Scholastic Federation throughout her high school career.

Jenn is a competitor and our current distance swimmers are excited to train with her everyday,” said Hill. “She is a leader and very driven to succeed. I know she will excel in our program both as a swimmer and a student.”

Cahill will join the Broncos from Baldwin High School in Wailuku, Hawaii, where she has made a lasting impact on the swimming program. She has been named the team MVP in all three years of her high school career, and was named the Maui Interscholastic League Swimmer of the Year for the 2006-07 season.

“I wanted a swim team that felt like a family, a coaching staff that could help me achieve my goals and academics that can get me where I want to be in the long run,” said Cahill.

Cahill will have high expectations as she is already a standout in the state of Hawaii. In the 2006-07 season, she became the state champion in the 500 free, which she currently holds the record for in the MIL. She is also her age group’s state champion in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free for her club team.

“Boise State is a place known for having great athletics,” said Hughey. “After visiting, I realized that I had found a school where I could pursue both my academic and athletic goals.”

Hill is currently serving in her third season as Boise State’s first head coach of swimming and diving and continuing to build the young program that officially began in the 2006-07 school year.
