Broncos Battle to Perfect 7-0 Victory Over Penn State

BOISE, Idaho The 45^th-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team closed out their first weekend of play with a perfect 2-0 record. Extending that perfect streak, the Broncos went as far as winning their Sunday morning match against Penn State, 7-0, at the Boas Tennis Center.

The Broncos started well, earning the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Freshman Lauren Megale and junior Pichittra Thongdach teamed to down Monika Mical and Sarah Lotto of Penn State, 7-6, in the No. 1 doubles match. Senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen joined together to defeat Lauren McCarthy and Denisa Zobeideh, 8-5, in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 match, freshman Rocio Frej and senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk earned an 8-3 win over Dorothy Dohanics and Maria Prishlyak for the doubles sweep.

In singles play, Megale led the team off with the first win, downing Prishlyak, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match. Frej finished at nearly the same time with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lotto in the No. 6 spot. In the No. 1 spot, Thongdach picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mical to clinch the Boise State team win at, 4-0. Baum went on to win at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-0 over Leyla Morzan while Jochimsen battled McCarthy to a 4-6, 6-4 (12-10) win in the No. 3 spot. Wlodarczyk came from behind in the No. 4 singles match against Dohanics, 6-3, 4-6 (11-9) to seal the Broncos’ perfect 7-0 team finish.

The Broncos continue their 2009 season next weekend, when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off tournament. There they will first face Clemson on Sat., Jan. 31 and will play either Louisville or Auburn on Sun., Feb. 1.
