MINNEAPOLIS – Jason Chamberlain and George Ivanov picked up individual wins but the Boise State wrestling team (0-3) was outmatched in a 30-6 loss to No. 1 Minnesota, Sunday.
Chamberlain, who is ranked third in the nation at 149 pounds, did not get the chance to wrestle top-ranked Dylan Ness and instead faced Seth Lange. The senior from Sandy, Utah controlled the bout to give Broncos their first points of the match with a 13-6 decision.
Ivanov followed the decision with one of his own against Brad Dolezal at 157 pounds, moving to 6-2 on the season. Ivanov was up 4-2 after the end of the second period but put together a late surge to end up one point short of a major decision, winning 10-3.
No. 12 Jake Swartz was handed his first defeat of the season in a closely contested bout against No. 4 Kevin Steinhaus at 184 pounds. The redshirt junior took an early lead, but Steinhaus rallied back and played defense for a 5-3 decision.
J.T. Felix gave the reigning national champion and top-ranked Tony Nelson all he could handle. Each of the heavyweights were patient to take their shots, with Nelson getting one more than Felix in a 4-2 decision.
Minnesota had ranked opponents at every weight class besides 149 and 157, with each individual’s ranking of 11th or better.
The Broncos will be back in action when they hold a home meet against No. 10 Oregon State in Spokane Valley, Wash., Saturday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. MT.
