MURRAY, Utah -
The Boise State women's and men's cross country teams had a successful start to their 2013 season after placing first and second, respectively, at the 2013 Utah Open, Friday evening.


The Bronco women won the meet with 23-points, topping Weber State University (56-points) and University of Utah (58-points) in Murray City Park. Emma Bates led the team winning the women's 4-kilometer title in 14:11.0. Fellow junior Marisa Howard came in second with a time of 14:14.3.

In addition Lauren Lucas placed fifth (14:40.5), while Erin McLaughlin placed seventh (14:43.3). Taryn Treadway (14:51.6), Kate Jette (14:56.0), Shelby McIntyre (15:05.0), and Hayley Gregoire (15:05.9) swept the ninth through 12th-place spots, respectively, while Shannon Susbauer rounded out the competing Broncos with a 14th-place finish (15:11.3).

The Bronco men placed second with 34-points, sitting six points behind No. 4 BYU (28-points). Weber State placed third with 66-points. Boise State was led by Aaron Back, who placed third with a time of 19:08.2 on the 6-kilometer course. David Elliott finished next for the Broncos, placing fourth in 19:13.9. Drew O'donoghue-McDonald placed seventh (19:19.9), while Jeff Howard finished 10th (19:31.3) and Allan Schroeder placed 14th (19:38.0) to round out the scoring Broncos. Zach Wiles rounded out the team with a 20th-place finish (20:36.5).

The Utah Open was the first of five regular season meets for the Broncos this season. Next week Boise State will stay close to home, racing at the Roger Curran Invitational hosted by Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa's West Park. The meet is slated for a 12 noon start.
