Broncos Swept In Reno

3/26/2016 12:00:00 AM | Softball

March 26, 2016

RENO, Nev. -- Boise State could not avoid the sweep in Reno as Nevada broke open a 1-1 game with three runs in the fifth and beat the Broncos, 5-2, Saturday.

Boise State (8-23, 0-3 MW) has a quick turnaround ahead, hosting No. 23/25 Fresno State at Dona Larsen Park Tuesday and Wednesday. The Broncos and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the getaway game set for noon Wednesday.

Bronco starter Mackenzie McGill threw well until running into trouble in the fifth. A leadoff walk to Hannah Harger followed by singles from Aaliyah Gibson and Kwynn Warner loaded the bases, prompting Paige Reimann to come on in relief. Raquel Martinez doubled into left-center to drive in Harger and Gibson, and Megan Sweet followed with an RBI single to plate Warner and make it 4-1.

McGill fell to 3-4 with the loss, being charged with four runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts over four-plus innings.

Nevada's Brooke Bolinger got her second win of the series, holding the Broncos to just a run on seven hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters. Boise State got its only run of the contest off of Bolinger in the fourth, when Kora Wade led off the frame with a single and scored on Makenzie Sullivan's triple.

Wade led the Broncos with two hits Saturday, while Kaitlyn Shreves doubled and Sullivan, Shaelee Pearson and Tatiana Sorokina and Rebekah Cervantes each had a hit.

Nevada (22-5, 3-0 MW) added a run in the sixth on Gibson's triple to right that scored Harger. Gibson went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Wolf Pack, while Martinez drove in two runs and Jennifer Purcell doubled twice.

The Broncos got a run in the seventh as Pearson came home on a wild pitch, but Bolinger got the final two batters to finish the complete game.

The Wolf Pack took a 1-0 lead in the second on an Amanda Nicholas RBI single to center after loading the bases to open the frame. But McGill and the Bronco defense got out of the inning without further damage, as Cervantes snagged a Harger line drive and doubled Melissa Arriaga off at second, followed by Nicholas grounding out to leave the bases loaded.
