COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Broncos (13-2-1, 7-0-1) were undeterred by a snowy, 20-degree afternoon at Colorado College (8-5-1, 4-3-1) and capitalized on their best chance of the game in the 82nd minute to secure the pivotal 1-0 victory in Colorado Springs. The 13 wins ties the program record for most wins in a season.
Raimee Sherle scored the goal with the assists coming from McKenna Kynett and Aubree Chatterton, seizing the moment on a day where quality opportunities were few and far between.
With the Tiger defense well established, Chatterton received a pass from Sherle just outside the box on the left side. The sophomore calmly found Kynett at the top of the box, who quickly slipped a pass to Sherle at the top of the goal area with only the keeper to beat. The No. 1 goal scorer in the country kept it simple and went left post to give the Broncos the game-winning goal.
"I think that might have been the best goal of the season," head coach Jim Thomas said after the game. "It was so composed – to be that calm and collected in that moment says a lot about our team. There was so much to overcome on the day, but the girls stayed focused and found a result."
The 1-0 victory marks the ninth shutout of the season for Tara Fisher, who is now alone in first place in program history for single-season shutouts. The senior only had to make one save on the day, but was pivotal once again directing the Broncos to successfully defending six Tiger corner kicks.
Sherle added another Mountain West record to her name as her goal in the 82nd minute was her 19th of the season, giving her the conference record for most goals in a single season.
"It's everything to us," Thomas said on the individual records. "People now know how good Tara is. She is tough to fluster and always calm no matter the situation. She's an incredibly important cog in the wheel and we're thrilled for her to earn the record."
"As for Raimee… when you are the most targeted central forward in the conference – maybe in the country – and you continue to score goals across all types of conditions, it's truly a testament to the quality of player she is."
Boise State was outshot 11-7, but held a 7-6 advantage in corners in what was largely a defensive battle. Colorado College, who entered the day in third place in the conference, showed grit throughout the day and limited the chances for the Broncos.
Sherle and Chatterton both got off shots early on in the seventh and 15th minutes while Addison Standlee was able connect on a header in the 21st off a corner kick, but the Tiger defense was otherwise effective against the Blue and Orange in the first 45 minutes.
CC briefly took advantage of the prevailing tailwind to start the second half with a handful of shots in the first 15 minutes, but Boise State was able to regain the momentum at roughly the 60-minute mark.
After the Boise State goal in the 82nd, the Tigers were only able to get a shot off in the 86th. Any other comeback attempt was turned away by the Broncos, stretching the team's unbeaten streak to a program record 10 games.
With Wyoming defeating San Jose State 3-2 in overtime later on Sunday, Boise State (22 points) is now clear of the Spartans (18 points) by four points for first place in the Mountain West.
The Broncos will now conclude the regular season with three home games against Fresno State (Friday, Oct. 19), San Jose State (Sunday, Oct. 21) and Utah State (Friday, Oct. 26) at the Boas Soccer Complex.
