Broncos Drop Regular Season Finale

10/26/2018 9:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho – It was a heartbreaking loss to end the regular season for the Broncos (13-4-2, 7-2-2), who fell to Utah State (3-13-2, 2-7-2) in double overtime, 2-1, Friday afternoon at the Boas Soccer Complex. Despite the loss, Boise State still maintains its share of the Mountain West regular season championship and has secured the No. 1 or 2 seed at next week's Mountain West Championship (Oct. 30 – Nov. 3) in San Jose, Calif.

The Aggies scored on a penalty kick in the 108th minute in the second overtime period to win on the golden goal. The Broncos' six seniors: Tara Fisher, Eva Herrera, Annie Lorelei Hoffman, Michelle Reed, Addison Standlee and Allegra Weeks were honored prior to the game.

"It's disappointing, obviously," head coach Jim Thomas said. "Difficult weather conditions were a part of it, but at the end of the day you have to rise above it if you want to get what we are after… We have some mirrors to look into, some reflection to do on ourselves to figure out what we're going to do with this opportunity we have created for ourselves (at the conference tournament)."

Raimee Sherle scored her 20th goal of the season in the 59th minute, making her just the sixth player in the NCAA to score 20 or more goals in a single season since 2015.

The goal, however, was a response to an earlier Utah State goal, as Kami Warner scored in the 53rd to give the visitors a temporary 1-0 lead.

While the game eventually went to overtime and was won by the Utah State, Boise State showed many positive moments and produced several quality chances throughout the game. The Blue and Orange led the way in shots (20-12) and shots on goal (11-5).

Sherle wasted no time in testing the Utah State keeper, as she put one on goal right out of the gate in the second minute. The junior put two more on frame in the first half while Reed and Hoffman also got off good looks.

The second half began with Utah State claiming the momentum with three shots in the first five minutes, ultimately resulting in Warner's goal off a corner kick in the 53rd.

Boise State responded decisively after the Aggie goal, as Macie Nelson almost found the equalizer in the 55th, but her header was saved by Grace McGuire. Kristina Serres put one over the goal just seconds later, and Herrera hit the left post in the 57th on a long-range bomb.

The Broncos broke through shortly after in the 59th, as Aubree Chatterton tallied her second assist of the season with a great ball to Sherle in the middle of the box, who spun around her defender to get off a shot and finish, bringing the Blue and Orange level at 1-1.

Both sides had chances for the remainder of regulation, but neither were able to convert.

Herrera tallied three more shots over the course of overtime while Sherle had two more attempts saved by McGuire before the Aggies drew the penalty in the box and converted the PK.

Now as a No. 1 or 2 seed, Boise State will play at either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. PT, Thursday, Nov. 1 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Championship. The top-two seed marks the first time that the Broncos have secured a bye in the MW Championship since joining the conference in 2011.
