Boise State Edged in Five by San Diego State

10/4/2018 11:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Roberts and Hughes record double-doubles to lead Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho – Despite double-doubles from its seniors, Sabryn Roberts and Morgan Hughes, the Boise State volleyball team fell in five sets to San Diego State Thursday night at Boise as the Broncos dropped a tightly contested Mountain West Conference match 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-25, 15-11 to the Aztecs.

Roberts recorded her seventh double-double of the year on a team-high 20 kills – her fourth 20-plus kills match of the year – to go with 10 digs. It also marks the 16th-consecutive match she has led the team in kills.

Hughes hit a team-best 44.4 percent for 10 kills to go with her 10 digs in recording her second double-double of the season. Hughes also served up a team and career-best – at Boise State – six aces, in addition to leading the team in blocks with three.

Janell Walley tallied a second-best 13 kills on the night while hitting 26.7 percent. The junior added two service aces, five digs and a block to her stat line versus SDSU.

Kiley Lewis added seven kills and two blocks, while freshman setter Danielle Boss dished out a team-high 46 assists. Another freshman, Jessie Brigham, recorded a team-high 14 digs.

For the second match in a row – both losses – Boise State out hit and had more kills than its opponent, but could not get the victory. The Broncos hit 22.3 percent against the Aztecs for 58 kills compared to SDSU's 20.6 percent hitting and 48 kills.

The Aztecs had more blocks 11 to five and fewer service errors six to 17 in collecting the win. When the Blue and Orange did serve well it recorded twice as many service aces than the visitors by a 12 to six margin.

Unfortunately for Boise State, it suffered from key errors that came at crucial times that stymied their momentum when the Broncos had things going their way.

The loss drops the Broncos to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in MW action. Next up for Boise State is a second home match this week when the Broncos host league-leading Fresno State at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs swept Utah State Thursday night in Logan, Utah, to improve to 12-5 overall and 4-0 in MW play.
