Game Notes

THE GAME: Boise State will look to claim its first win of the season, Friday, Nov. 16, when Jackson State comes to Taco Bell Arena for an 8 p.m. tip. The game between the Broncos and Tigers will be the second game of a doubleheader for Boise State basketball, as the women will take on Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m.

If fans arrive to the women's game before halftime, they will receive free admission to the men's game. Fans who arrive after halftime of the women's game will receive normal single-game men's basketball prices.

RADIO: Radio coverage of Friday's game will broadcast exclusively on 93.1 FM KTIK. Mark Snider will handle play-by-play with Abe Jackson providing commentary.

ABOUT JACKSON STATE: The Tigers are 0-2 so far this season with a home loss to UL-Monroe (75-66) and a road defeat at St. Bonaventure (67-36). Three players are averaging double-digit points for Jackson State: Venjie Wallis (11.5 ppg), Jayveous McKinnis (10.5 ppg) and Jontrell Walker (10.0 ppg).

FIRST MEETING: Tomorrow night's game will be the first meeting between Boise State and Jackson State. The Broncos are 1-0 against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) schools in head coach Leon Rice's eight years at Boise State, as the team picked up the 81-63 win against Texas Southern (Nov. 11, 2012) in his third season.

LAST TIME OUT: Boise State held an 18-point lead in the second half against Idaho State last Saturday, but the Bengals were able to come back and steal the 72-70 victory in the Broncos' season opener. The Bengals hit two free throws with just 0.6 seconds left in the game to take the two-point lead. The loss snapped a 24-game home non-conference winning streak.

TRANSFERS STEPPING UP: For the second-straight season, Boise State appears that it will benefit from the play of two transfers who are in their first seasons wearing the Blue and Orange. Last year it was Chris Sengfelder (11.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and Lexus Williams (9.5 ppg, 2.3 apg) who were welcome new faces, and this season it seems that Dembley and Williams could also step into similar roles.

Williams led all Bronco scorers with 15 points against Idaho State while Dembley chipped in 13 points and a game-high four assists. The two combined to play 46 minutes and both picked up the starts.

ALSTON MOVING INTO BIGGER ROLE: Derrick Alston received his first-career start last Saturday against Idaho State and made the most of it, tallying career highs in minutes (35), points (9) and rebounds (7). The 6-foot-8-inch guard already exceeded his minutes played from the 2017-18 season (26 minutes, 11 games) in his performance against Idaho State.

EXPERIENCED COACHING STAFF: With third-year assistant coach Mike Burns and first-year assistant coach Tim Duryea both on the Boise State bench, the Broncos are one of just 13 school in NCAA Division I to have two or more former Division I head coaches on staff. Burns coached at Eastern Washington from 2004-07 while Duryea coached at Utah State from 2015-18.

TAKING CARE OF IT: While the win didn't come last Saturday, Boise State was exceptional at taking care of the ball against the Bengals, as they ended the game with only nine turnovers. To put the statistic in context, last year's 2017-18 team tallied just five single-digit turnover games over the course of the entire season.

The Broncos are 49-19 under Rice when tallying fewer than 10 turnovers.
