Harrell's Career Night Leads Broncos

11/10/2018 8:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women rolled on Saturday, beating Southern Oregon, 91-46, led by a career-high 23 points from senior forward Joyce Harrell.

The Broncos (2-0), who led 41-19 at the break, shot 60.0 percent (21-for-35) in the second half to pull away from the Raiders. Harrell finished the game 11-for-14, setting another career high for field goals made in addition to her point total, while grabbing six rebounds.

"It's senior year. It's all or nothing now. I can't get these games back so I have to leave it all on the court.," Harrell said.

Boise State overcame its up-and-down first half, which, despite a 22-point lead at the break, saw the Broncos shoot just 45.9 percent from the field, go 6-for-16 from 3-point range, and commit 11 turnovers. Marta Hermida provided the punch from deep, going 2-for-4 and scoring six points over the opening 20 minutes en route to finishing the day with 18. Harrell, Hermida, and freshman forward Rachel Bowers combined to go 10-for-14 to pace the Broncos to the lead, with Bowers accounting for all six of her points for the game in that first half.

Southern Oregon (1-0), an NAIA program for which Saturday's contest was an exhibition, took advantage of Bronco turnovers over the opening two minutes of the second half to score seven straight and get as close as 15 at 41-26. Boise State would speed it up in response, getting fast-break layups from A'Shanti Coleman and Harrell to spur a 13-4 run over a 3:25 span during which Harrell scored 10 points.

"It was O.K. I wish we wouldn't have fouled so much. We have one more game to get ready before our schedule turns on us [Nov. 19 against Louisville] and becomes ferocious for us," Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell said after the game. "We have to clear up our fouling and we haven't shot the ball from three as well as I would like to. We'll get after it and keep trying."

Hermida kept up the hot hand from Thursday's opener, going 7-for-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from deep, her second-straight game with four triples.

Boise State's depth was on display once again, as eight different Broncos scored at least six points, the second-straight contest in which at least seven Broncos finished with six. Along with the 23 from Harrell and 18 from Hermida, Riley Lupfer closed the day with nine points, with Rachel Bowers scoring eight, Ellie Woerner seven, and six apiece from A'Shanti Coleman, Braydey Hodgins, and Jade Loville.

"I think it's good. We're playing with different people," Harrell said. "I think I'd rather know my teammates better now than February, getting ready for March. It's good now. I like the rotations and knowing all the different guards."

The Broncos are back in action next Friday, Nov. 16, against Northwest Christian. Tip-off at Taco Bell Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
