Game Notes
THE GAME: Boise State (1-1) will begin play at the Cayman Islands Classic this coming Monday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET in George Town, Cayman Islands at the John Gray Gymnasium against Creighton (2-1).
The Broncos will play either St. Bonaventure or Georgia State, Tuesday. The other side of the bracket includes Akron, Clemson, Georgia and Illinois State.
BACK ON A BIG STAGE: The Cayman Islands Classic will be the fifth mid-season, bracketed tournament that the Broncos have played in head coach Leon Rice's nine years at the helm.
Boise State played in the 2013 Diamond Head Invitational, the 2015 Wooden Legacy, the 2016 Charleston Classic and the 2017 Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach prior to the 2018 Cayman Islands Classic.
The two best finishes in that time span came in the 2013 Diamond Head Invitational and the 2017 Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach, as the Broncos fell in those two championship games and took second place. Both losses came to Iowa State.
RADIO: Radio coverage of Monday's game will broadcast on the Bronco Radio Network, with 670 KBOI serving as the flagship station. Bob Behler will handle play-by-play duties.
WATCH: Every game at the Cayman Islands Classic will be streamed live exclusively on the Stadium Facebook page.
ABOUT CREIGHTON: The Bluejays are 2-1 with victories against Western Illinois and East Tennessee State. They most recently fell at home to Ohio State (Nov. 15), 69-60.
Ty-Shon Alexander is Creighton's No. 1 scorer (16.0 ppg) while Damien Jefferson is the top rebounder (6.0 rpg). The Blue Jays have been efficient from behind the arc thus far, going 29-of-63 (46%).
SHORT, BUT MEANINGFUL HISTORY: The Blue and Orange will undoubtedly be looking to recreate a result from the 2012-13 season in the only previous meeting between Boise State and Creighton. The Broncos went on the road, Nov. 28, 2012, and picked up a season-defining win in upsetting the then-No. 11 ranked Bluejays in Omaha by a score of 83-70.
Beating No. 11 Creighton that season still stands as the highest ranked opponent that the Broncos have ever defeated in program history.
SIMILAR JUNCTURES: On paper, the Broncos and Bluejays come into the 2018-19 season at comparable junctures as programs.
Both teams lost three starters from their 2017-18 teams – with one being a 2018 NBA Draft selection (Chandler Hutchison – 22nd to the Chicago Bulls, Khyri Thomas – 38th to the Philadelphia 76ers) and both teams lost roughly 50 percent of its scoring and rebounding from last season.
WILLIAMS PLAYING WELL: It hasn't taken long for RJ Williams to settle in and begin performing well for the Blue and Orange, as the junior transfer has led the Broncos in scoring in each of the first two games, tallying 15 against Idaho State (Nov. 10) and 18 against Jackson State (Nov. 16). Williams is currently eighth in the Mountain West in scoring at 16.5 points per game.
MASSIVE JUMP FOR ALSTON: After playing just 26 minutes over the course of the entire 2017-18 season, Derrick Alston has made a huge jump in 2018-19, scoring nine and 14 points against Idaho State and Jackson State, respectively, tallying career-high performances each time. The redshirt sophomore has started both games and played 63 minutes – the second most for any Bronco.
RELIABLE HANEY: Zach Haney tallied the second double-double of his career with 12 points and 12 rebounds (a career high) against Jackson State. The redshirt senior was also solid in the opener against the Bengals, going for 11 points and five rebounds in just 18 minutes.
