Boise State Rolls Past San Diego State in Four

Morgan Hughes records career-high 10 blocks tying for seventh most all-time.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sabryn Roberts, Janell Walley and Morgan Hughes combined for 36 kills to lead Boise State as the Broncos rolled past the San Diego State Aztecs in four sets 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 Saturday night in San Diego. The match was tightly contested throughout with the largest margin of victory being three points by Boise State in all three of its set wins. Â

"I'm really proud of the way the team played tonight and battled hard through every set," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "This was a close match to the end and I though our seniors came through for us big tonight, Sabryn (Roberts) with her 16 kills and Morgan (Hughes) with her presence at the net getting 10 blocks and nine kills. This was a really big win for us on the road and I couldn't be prouder of the entire team."
The first set saw five lead changes and 12 ties before the Broncos held on for the win. The second set saw the Broncos take the lead early and led nearly the entire way in a close period. The third was close and went back and forth with four lead changes and eight ties before the Aztecs pulled it out down the stretch to force a fourth set.
The final set saw San Diego State take the lead early and hold onto it until late. Down four at 18-14, Boise State roared back with a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the set at 19-18. The Broncos never trailed again, but San Diego State came back and tied it up twice, the last came at 21-21. Roberts and Jessica Donahue led Boise State's final 4-1 surge to put the match away as they each tallied one kill and combined for two blocks as the blue and orange held on the for the three-point win.Â
The victory moves Boise State to 16-9 overall and 8-6 in Mountain West play, while San Diego State — who won the first meeting in Boise in five sets — fell to 8-19 and 6-8 in league.
Roberts led Boise State with a team-high 16 kills to go with four assists, eight digs and three blocks to end with a team-high 17.5 points. Walley followed with 11 kills and had two service aces, seven digs and five blocks, good for 15.5 points.Â
Hughes was all over the court for the Broncos tallying nine kills and just missed the double-double as she added a career-high 10 blocks. She hit a team-best 27.3 percent and had three assists, two service aces and six digs to finish with 16 points.Â
Donahue was solid once again finishing with eight kills and seven blocks for 12 points. Meanwhile, Cassedi Simon dished out 40 assists and tallied four kills, seven digs and career-high five blocks.
Boise State hit 18.4 percent as a team for 54 kills on 49 assists with five service aces, 43 digs and had a season-high 17.5 blocks. The block total is third most in program history and the most since October of 2012 when they had 18.5 against CSU Bakersfield.Â
The Aztecs were held to 16.8 percent hitting for 52 kills on 46 assists to go with two service aces, 53 digs and nine blocks.Â
The Broncos return home this week to host two big conference matches against the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and league-leading Colorado State at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Â Â
