BOISE, Idaho - Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien has been named among the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award finalists, as the award committee trimmed its list of candidates from 15 to 10 Thursday.
Rypien is the only Mountain West quarterback among the final 10, and one of just two Group of Five quarterbacks, along with UCF's McKenzie Milton.
It is the third award this season for which Rypien has made the midseason cut. The Spokane, Wash., native was named a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy on Nov. 1, and a CFPA Performer of the Year Trophy midseason candidate on Nov. 6.
Through the games of Nov. 3, Rypien, the FBS active career leader in passing yardage (12,655), ranks in the national top 20 in completions per game (24.7, seventh), passing yards (2,779, sixth), passing yards per game (308.8, ninth), passing touchdowns (24, eighth), passing efficiency (159.3, 14th), and completion percentage (67.7, 14th),
He has also notched six 300-yard passing games this season, bringing his career total to 20 to match BYU's Max Hall (2007-09) as the Mountain West all-time co-leader. Entering this Friday's contest against No. 16/17 Fresno State, Rypien is just 36 yards shy of becoming the Mountain West's all-time leader (San Diego State's Ryan Lindley is the all-time leader at 12,690). At 957 career completions, Rypien is also just five away from overtaking Lindley's all-time record of 961.
Boise State (7-2, 4-1 MW) and No. 16/17 Fresno State (8-1, 5-0 MW) face off Friday night at Albertsons Stadium, with kickoff set for 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2.
