Boise State Falls to No. 13 Washington

Sabryn Roberts led the Broncos hitting a team-best 37.8 percent for a team-high 18 kills against the nationally-ranked Huskies.
BOISE, Idaho (9/13/2018) - Boise State volleyball opened its home schedule Thursday night battling 13th-rank Washington 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 to open the Boise State Classic. Senior Sabryn Roberts had a solid match leading the Broncos hitting a team-best 37.5 percent for a team-high 18 kills to go with four digs and three blocks. Boise State fought hard, but struggled with Washington's size and experience falling in three sets. The loss drops the Broncos to 6-2 overall with three more home matches this weekend against CSU Northridge, Portland and Sacramento State.
Boise State's Sabryn Roberts needed one kill entering the contest to become the 15th member of Boise State's 1,000 career kills club, she recorded it in the first set with the Huskies leading 6-4. She quickly followed with four more to help Boise State to a 12-3 run that put the Broncos up 14-9.Â
The Broncos would lead by as many as five in the first set at 14-9 and 15-10, but could not hold on as the Huskies rallied to take the set 25-22. Roberts finished the period with nine of her 18 kills on the night. Â
Set two was another battle as the Broncos took the Huskies to the wire before falling 25-23. Tied at 13, Washington ran off a 5-0 run to take control up 18-13. Boise State recorded no blocks in the opening frame before tallying six in the second. The Huskies led by as many as five points twice at 18-13 and again at 23-18 before Kiley Lewis led a Boise State rally. The Broncos came from 23-18 down to within 23-22 as Lewis tallied two kills and a block assist during the run. Unfortunately, Washington regrouped to hold off the Blue and Orange for a 25-23 win.
The third set was Washington's from the first serve as the Huskies took a 9-1 lead and never trailed. Down 22-9, Boise State did make a game of it as the Broncos rallied to close with in 24-17 on a 7-0 run before the Huskies claimed the set and match with a 25-17 win. Â Â
Jessica Donahue followed Roberts for Boise State recording six kills and two blocks, while Kiley Lewis and Janell Walley each added four kills.Â
The Broncos hit 14.5 percent on the night as a team for 39 kills on 35 assists. They also finished with two service aces, 41 digs and seven blocks.
Washington countered by hitting 25.2 percent for 41 kills on 39 assists with seven service aces, 37 digs and 11 bocks. The Huskies were led by Samantha Drechsel with nine kills and four blocks, followed by Kara Bajema and Destiny Julye with eight kills each.
The Broncos will be back in action on a very busy Friday at the Boise State Classic which will feature five matches starting at 9:30 a.m. and run consecutively without a major break. Boise State will face CSU Northridge at 2:30 p.m. and undefeated Portland at 7:30 p.m., times may vary depending on the progress of the matches preceding both contests.Â
