Upset Bid Comes Up Short as Boise State Falls in Heartbreaker to Portland
9/14/2018 11:52:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Roberts, Walley and Lewis combined for 54 kills to lead the Bronco Offense.
BOISE, Idaho (9/14/2018) - Boise State volleyball's bid to hand undefeated Portland its first loss of the season came up just short as the Broncos fell in a heartbreaking five-set match 25-17, 25-27, 13-25, 25-21, 15-11. Sabryn Roberts, Janell Walley and Kiley Lewis combined for 54 of Boise State's 71 kills to lead the Broncos against the Pilots. It was another match of balanced offense for Boise State, but it was not enough to propel the Broncos to victory.
"It was a tough loss, but I do think the team played well," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "We didn't come out really strong in the first set. It took a while to get use to the speed of Portland's offense, but once we got into a rhythm I thought we played really well. Passing was good and our setting was spectacular. We had a lot of hitters contributing at a high level. It's a match we can definitely learn a lot from and look forward to building on."
"This was one of our better matches we've played," commented Garus. "Even though the loss is not what we wanted, we played well against a really good team in a fun environment and we played point for point with them right down to the end. I think the total score was really close and I think both teams played really well at times, but somebody had to lose and tonight it was us. As long as we learn from it and bounce back for our match tomorrow we're ok."
It was the fifth match of the day in the Boise State Classic and the second for the Blue and Orange who beat CSU Northridge 3-0 earlier in the third contest Friday afternoon. The loss moves the Broncos to 7-3 on the year with a match Saturday at noon against Sacramento State who is 0-2 at the tournament.
It was Roberts' third match of the year with 20-plus kills and sixth with a double-double adding 15 digs to go with her kill total of 24. The senior hit 33.9 percent in the contest with two assists, one service ace and one block, she recorded team highs for kills, digs and points (21.0).Â
"Sabryn was really good and they definitely tried to pick on her," Garus said. "They tried to serve her tough and get a big block against her every time. She still played fantastic, little bit of a slow start in the first set but I thought she responded really well. She did what you expect a senior to do in tough situations. She was there for the team."
Walley added a double-double of her own with 18 kills and 12 digs, she hit 34.2 percent and had one service ace and a block. Lewis finished with 12 kills and six digs, while Morgan Hughes chipped in with nine kills, one service ace, six digs and three blocks. Jessica Donahue finished with seven kills and team-high five blocks.
Danielle Boss had the third double-double for the Broncos dishing out a career-high 61 assists as the setter to go with 11 digs, the freshman added a career-high four blocks as well. Â
Boise State hit 27.7 percent on the night for 71 kills on 67 assists with five service aces, 62 digs and seven blocks. Portland countered with 29.3 percent hitting for 62 kills on 59 assists with six service aces, 66 digs and nine blocks.Â
The first set saw Portland either up on the scoreboard or tied with the Broncos. The Pilots broke a close 15-14 set open with a 10-3 run to close the period with a eight-point victory over the blue and orange. Boise State was led by Roberts with four kills as the Broncos hit 13.9 percent in the set.
Portland used a 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead in the second set, before Boise State stormed back with a 7-1 run to go up 24-21. The home side won the period on a bad set by Portland.
Boise State seized control of the third set early rolling off an 11-3 run to go up 13-5 over the Pilots. Portland never really threatened after that as the Broncos dominated throughout hitting 43.6 percent while holding Portland to 10 percent in the period. Â
The fourth set saw 13 ties and four lead changes as Portland rallied to take the set 25-21. It was a one or two point set most of the way, with the teams tied at 18 Portland took momentum with a 2-0 run. Boise State never recovered as the Pilots evened the match with a four-point win.Â
The fifth set was just as tight as the rest with the two sides trading points most of the way. Tied at nine, Portland surged with another 2-0 run to take control. Â The Broncos came back within 11-10 but could get no closer as Portland closed it out 15-11.Â
