Three Different Broncos Score in 3-0 Win

9/16/2018 5:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State (6-2-0) solidified its best non-conference season in program history (according to winning percentage) with a convincing 3-0 victory over Idaho State Sunday afternoon at the Boas Soccer Complex. Raimee Sherle (6th), Ashleigh Harrison (42nd) and McKenna Kynett (78th) all tallied goals as the Broncos secured their fourth shutout of the season.

The Blue and Orange were once again at their best with the various offensive threats, as the team moves to 39-1-1 under sixth year head coach Jim Thomas when multiple players score.

Sherle's goal gives the junior her 34th goal of her career, putting her just one away from tying the program record held by Shannon Saxton (35; 2007-10). The goal also was her fifth game-winning goal of the season, as she continues to lead the nation in the statistic.

The 663 fans at Boas Sunday also marked the highest attendance for a home game in the last two seasons. In addition, the six-game winning streak at Boas (dating back to last season) is the second-longest home winning streak in program history.

"Come out to Boas and you'll figure it out," Thomas said when asked about why the team is so successful at home. "We have the best crowds, it's really great weather, the field is beautiful and it's just an awesome atmosphere to play to the game in… I think we come here and we relish all of that. We've been out on the road a fair amount (so far this season) and we're definitely looking forward to not being on the road as much. I think with the wholesome crowd and the field that we have here, it all makes it turn in our favor."

With Sunday's game being the team's only game of the weekend, the Broncos used their fresh legs to quickly overwhelm the Bengals right out of the gate.

It didn't take long to find the scoring column, as Emily Curry played a magnificent ball to Sherle in the center of the field, who then advanced it all the way to the top of the box where the Idaho State keeper left the net to meet her. Sherle used a beautiful touch to her left and side-stepped the keeper to put away the wide open shot in the sixth minute for the 1-0 Boise State lead.

The Broncos were relentless in the first half, as they outshot ISU 15-2 in the first 45 minutes. Kynett saw a couple great opportunities in 35th and 38th minutes, but it was Harrison who ended up doubling the lead in the 42nd.

Allegra Weeks boomed a long pass over the Idaho State backline to find a sprinting Harrison, who used a deft touch to first chip the ball over the keeper. She used her speed to track it down herself, beating a Bengal defender to put the header into the back of the net for the 2-0 Bronco lead.

Idaho State was a bit more threatening in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Boise State was able to use its depth to decisively retake control of the game from the 60th minute on.

Some of that depth marked the first games played in the 2018 season for several Bronco players, as Jennifer Turnek, Sarah Nehring and Kennedy Oleson all saw time on the pitch.

The third and final goal was once again a product of the team's assist leader – Kristina Serres. The junior tallied her fourth assist of the season when she made another great run up the right sideline, ultimately dribbling her way into the box where she dumped off a perfect pass to a crashing Kynett, who hammered it home for her fourth goal of the season in the 78th.

Boise State almost added on to its 3-0 lead in the 86th minute when Kynett and Sherle had opportunities within seconds of one another as the Bengal keeper made a quick save on Kynett's shot and punched the ball to Sherle's feet, but was once again able to come up with another close-quarters save to keep it a three-goal Bronco advantage.

The Broncos were dominant statistically, outshooting the Bengals, 25-7, along with earning more corner kicks (6-2).

Tara Fisher picked up her fourth shutout of the season with two saves. The four shutouts already puts her in a tie for eighth in the Boise State single-season record book.

The Blue and Orange will now prepare for conference play as they will open Mountain West action at home back at the Boas Soccer Complex against Nevada (3-3-2), Friday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. The first 200 fans to the game will receive a pair of Bronco sunglasses.
