DRIGGS, Idaho - The Broncos rallied on the final day to shoot 4-under and rose to a tie for sixth place (290-297-284=871) Tuesday at the Showdown in the Rockies.
Three Broncos shot under par in round three, with junior Brian Humphreys leading the way with a 69 (-3) and finishing the tournament tied for the ninth at -2 (71-74-69=214). This is Humphreys' 10th top-ten finish of his career, tying him for fourth all-time in Bronco history.
Coach Dan Potter said, on Humphreys performance, "Brian had a horrible start. It takes a lot of maturity to put that behind you and shoot three under. That was huge for us. He knows how to just keep going and he's obviously good enough to make a lot of birdies when he gets on track."
Sophomore Skyler Eubank fired off four birdies for a 71 and a three-round score of +1 (72-74-71=214), good for a tie for 14th. Freshman Hugo Townsend carded three birdies and four bogeys for a 73 on the day and +1 (69-75-73=214) for the tournament, good enough to match Eubank for a tie at 14th.
A strong back nine by junior Mason Schulze included three birdies to shoot one-under 71 Tuesday, finishing the tournament at +7 (78-74-71=223), tied for 37th. Junior Connor Johnstone rounded out the Bronco lineup shooting a 75, ending his tournament at +18 (84-75-75=234), tied for 54th.
Coach Potter on the team's performance this week, "Our guys showed some grit today. We played our first hole of the day terribly. Brian and Mason both made 7 on at the first hole (#10) and both came back to shoot under par. It was nice to shoot an under par team score on a good course today but we still need to be better from start to finish going forward."
The Broncos will return to action next Tuesday-Wednesday, Sept. 25-26, at the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington at Aldarra Golf Club.Â
