Roberts and Hughes combined for 28 kills to lead the Broncos
BOISE, Idaho - Morgan Hughes and Sabryn Roberts combined for 28 kills to lead Boise State to a 3-0 sweep of New Mexico 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 Saturday afternoon in Boise. The match was tight throughout with neither team able to pull away from the other in three competitive sets as Boise State hit 22.2 percent while holding New Mexico to 12.9 percent. The win improves the Broncos to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in MW play, New Mexico falls to 7-7 and 1-1 in league.Â
"Both teams played really well at times, but in the end we were a little more consistent," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "The team did a good job of staying focused in the match. I'm looking forward to giving them a little bit of rest after a tough week."
Hughes was impressive on the day hitting a team-best 52.2 percent while recording a double-double on 14 kills and 10 digs, in addition to two blocks. Roberts matched Hughes' kill total and added two service aces, seven digs and three blocks.
"Compared to Thursday's loss, we were able to get ourselves out of tough ruts," said Hughes. "We were able to pick each other up and come back from deficits."
Kiley Lewis was big in the first set recording two of her seven kills late in the period that tied the score up at 24 and again at 25 to allow her team to comeback and win it in extra points 28-26. Â
Janell Walley added six kills, nine digs and two blocks in the win. Celine Christensen led the team in blocks with six to go with three kills. Â Danielle Boss dished out 31 assists with nine digs and two blocks.Â
Four players had either 10 or nine digs in the contest led by Hughes' team-high 10, followed by Boss, Walley and Jessie Brigham with nine each. Brigham had a team-high three service aces in the contest.Â
Boise State opened the match on a 6-1 run in set one to take what seemed like control of the period over UNM. However, the Lobos came back eventually tying it at 16-16 and taking the lead late. Boise State was forced to rally from 24-22 down to take the set behind two big Lewis kills that tied the score twice. Tied at 26 all, Boise State claimed the set on kills by Hughes and Roberts, respectively.Â
The second started in reverse fashion as UNM rolled out to a 3-0 lead, only to see the Broncos rally on a 8-1 run to go up 10-5. Boise State never trailed again and led by as many as seven points at 18-11. However, the Lobos attempted to rally pulling within 24-22 at the end before Walley's fifth kill of the match clinched it for the Blue and Orange at 25-22.
The final set saw New Mexico take the early momentum and led until the midway point of the period. Down 13-10, Boise State rolled off a 3-0 run to tie it at 13. The Broncos took their first lead of the period at 15-14. Tied at 14, the Broncos went on a 4-0 run to go up 18-14, the Blue and Orange never trailed again as they kept the Lobos at arms length down the stretch to collect the sweep. Â
