TUCSON, Ariz. – Boise State (4-2-0) battled the whole way, but Arizona (5-1-0) proved to be too much Friday night in Tucson, Ariz., taking down the Broncos, 2-0. The Blue and Orange used their depth to keep the Wildcat attack relatively in check, but couldn't capitalize on their own opportunities throughout the game.
The loss breaks up a three-game winning streak for Boise State, along with a three-game shutout streak. Arizona extended its winning streak to five games with the result.
Boise State did well in initially handling the Wildcats, successfully defending multiple chances in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Broncos settled in throughout the next 30 minutes, as the best chance of the half came in the 29th minute.
A Bronco counter attack led to a Raimee Sherle breakaway, but a tough angle along with pressure coming from a recovering Arizona defender quickly closed the window for Sherle, as her shot went just high over the goal.
Arizona scored its first goal of the game in the 40th when a looping ball played into the box found the head of Brooke Wilson, as she scored her third goal of the season.
Some halftime adjustments opened up the game a bit for the Broncos, as McKenna Kynett (52nd minute) and Piper Flannery (62nd minute) both logged quality chances in the early going of the second half.
Strong bench play coupled with quality defense from Boise State kept it a one-goal game for the majority of the second half, but the Wildcats eventually doubled their lead in the 80th off a set piece that resulted in a goal for Hallie Pearson.
The Broncos continued to fight, however, as a corner in the 89th minute almost put the visitors on the board. In total, 20 Broncos saw the field Friday night.
Tara Fisher made four saves as the Broncos were outshot 17-5.
Boise State will now regroup and make the trip east to Las Cruces, N.M., where it will face New Mexico State, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. MT.
