BRONCOS OPEN 2019 SEASON AT HOME

The Bronco women's tennis team is set to open its spring season on Saturday, January 19th at 11 a.m. against in-state rival Idaho State. The match is the first of three-straight home matches for the Broncos to begin the season.

Last year the Broncos faired well with a record of 14-8 including a perfect 5-0 against Mountain West opponents during the regular season, the best in the conference. This season, the Broncos return five players from last year's team, while also bringing five talented freshmen into the mix.

Lilian Poling and Wilhelmina Palmer will look to be the top two players for the Blue and Orange this spring after impressive runs in the fall and the winter. Palmer was able to win the singles championship at the Barb Chandler Classic (BCC) in October, while Poling just recently won the UTSA National Mixed Doubles Championship in December. The two were also able to claim the doubles championship of the BCC together, and they will look to continue their successes to help lead their team to another successful spring season.

Idaho State, meanwhile, will also bring some experience to the table as they return seven players from last year's team which went 9-13. The most recent meeting between the two teams saw the Broncos take down the Bengals 6-1 last February in Pocatello.

While last year was a step in the right direction, the Broncos will look to take an even bigger one this year as they continue to build a program which has been on the rise. This weekend's matchup will be a great chance for the team to set the tone for the remainder of the season.

WHAT'S THE SCOOP

The Broncos are an incredibly young team heading into the spring season. With no seniors on the roster, Boise State will have to rely on the leadership of juniors Jovana Kuljanin, Lilian Poling, and Wiktoria Nosek to help guide the team through the season. With seven of the ten players on roster being underclassmen, the future is bright for a Bronco program that is teeming with potential.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Junior Lilian Poling is heading into this match after winning the UTSA National Mixed Doubles Championship alongside her brother Karl over the winter break. Poling played some of her best tennis this past fall for the Broncos, which included a runner-up finish in the singles and a championship win in doubles at the Barb Chandler Classic in October. She will enter the season as one of the most talented players on the Broncos roster and will be someone to watch as the season progresses.

HEAD COACH BECK ROGHAAR

Roghaar is entering his ninth season as a Division I head coach for the Broncos, where last year he led the team to a 14-8 record and the Mountain West Mountain Division regular season title after going 5-0 against divisional opponents. The 2011 WAC Coach of the Year continues to build a rising Boise State program that has been built on the values of toughness and passion.
