Broncos Grind Out 75-74 Win At Nevada

1/16/2019 10:57:00 PM | Women's Basketball

RENO, Nev. - Boise State shot just 56 percent from the free-throw line Wednesday, but made the freebies when it mattered, hitting five of its last six over the final 24 seconds to withstand Nevada's comeback attempt and claim the 75-74 win in Reno.

Marta Hermida hit one of two from the line with 24 seconds left to get the Bronco lead to 71-66, and Jayde Christopher followed a Jade Redmon layup with two more from the line to keep it a five-point game with 12 seconds to go. It would be Braydey Hodgins' two free throws with 5.1 seconds to play, sandwiched between 3-pointers from Nevada's Camariah King, the latter at the buzzer, that made the difference in the margin.

"I was glad that we did enough to win the game. I thought that we had a decent fourth quarter, we made the plays we had to. But we didn't close it out as well as I'd like, both offensively and defensively," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell.

Despite leading by as many as 13 and looking in control a few minutes before halftime, the Broncos (13-2, 4-0 MW) cooled off and missed chances to put the Wolf Pack away. Boise State missed its final six field goals and went 1-for-4 from the line after A'Shanti Coleman's jumper gave the Broncos a 30-17 lead with 4:14 left in the second, but the defense held Nevada in check and the Broncos took a 10-point lead into the break at 31-21.

Nevada (5-11, 1-4 MW) would catch fire in the third quarter, however, going 10-for-12 from the floor over the frame and outscoring the Broncos, 28-23. Boise State, for its part, shot 53.8 from the field and went 7-for-9 from the line in the quarter to minimize the effect of Nevada's run, maintaining a five-point lead at 54-49 heading into the fourth.

The back-and-forth continued into the fourth, as Boise State couldn't shake the Wolf Pack. Jayde Christopher and Joyce Harrell opened the quarter with buckets to get the Bronco lead to nine at 58-49, but the Wolf Pack took advantage of two Boise State turnovers to go on a quick 6-0 run to cut the deficit to three with 7:07 to play.

Coleman, who led all players with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting, scored two-straight buckets, the second coming with 4:56 to play, to get the Bronco lead to eight at 64-56. But again, Nevada would cut at the lead, driving and drawing fouls and converting at the line, as Redmon and Terae Briggs hit four-straight freebies to bring Nevada to within two at 68-66 with 1:08 to play.

Harrell would score a driving layup off a feed from Riley Lupfer with 42 second to go, putting the Broncos up 70-66. The Bronco defense would come through on the next two Wolf Pack possessions, forcing King to throw the ball away on an inbounds play, followed by Hermida stealing another with 28 seconds to go.

The Broncos overcame 20 fouls and Nevada's 22-for-26 performance from the line, as Briggs led the Wolf Pack with 17 points and nine rebounds and 9-for-10 showing from the stripe. Redmon was perfect in six attempts at the line and finished the game with 16 points.

Along with Coleman's game-high 18 points, Boise State got 12 off the bench from Tess Amundsen, who went 5-for-6 from the field over just eight minutes of action. Harrell and Lupfer also hit double digits, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"Right now we haven't had the consistent level of shooting that we'd like to have. I think we're shooting a good percentage overall, and night in and night out A'Shanti's been able to do that for us, offensively."

Boise State will close the road week Saturday in the San Joaquin Valley, visiting fellow unbeaten Fresno State in a battle for first place in the Mountain West. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.
